How cool is this vid?:

It's part of the campaign for a bid to hold the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention in London in August 2014, which, y'know, would also be cool.
The Worldcon is the premier international science fiction event, and awards the prestigious Hugo Awards for achievement in the field of science fiction. 2014 will be the 75th anniversary of the first Worldcon, in New York in 1939, since when the event has been held every year apart from a break during the Second World War. It was last hosted by London in 1965, nearly fifty years ago.
Y'know the Hugo awards given out each year? To get a Hugo, you need to be shortlisted by attendees from the most recent and next WorldCon, then win the ballot of the attendees of just that WorldCon. So if you go to a WorldCon, you get to vote on who wins, etc.

Plus, also, a lot of major authors have a habit of turning up. Which is also nice. I'd love to go to a WorldCon (last UK one was before I'd heard of it), and this'd be great. They have an LJ Comm ([livejournal.com profile] londonin2014), a Twitter feed and a Facebook page, so you can go find more info &c. But, y'know, regardles, watch the vid, it's really well done, even if it is a bit over reliant on Doctor Who stuff.

On the subject of cool videos, and completely unrelated, have this pixel invasion added bonus:

Brilliant vid. I think there were maybe three or four references in there that I didn't get.

Oddly enough, ten minutes previously, I was reading the TV Tropes page on the Eiffel Tower Effect. Big Ben's tower seems to suffer here.

Having noticed that the final day of the convention will be on my 42nd birthday and be in the part of London that's most convenient for me, they surely have to get it.

No such thing as too much Doctor Who! And there was Quatermass and Big Brother and the Prisoner and V and... NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH DOCTOR WHO, DAMN YOU!

Also, we can go? I wants to go.

There was no V or Quatermass in there I'm afraid (Big Brother? Nineteen Eighty-Four shurely!)

Ah, sorry, you meant 'V For Vendetta' didn't you - I was thinking 'V'isitors! Still no Quatermass though :-)

The more obscure references are the dragon on Big Ben (which is a new straight to DVD steampunk Sherlock Holmes movie - that's actually a mechanical dragon), The Web Of Fear (which is what you might have mistaken for Quatermass - more Who I'm afraid), The Bed Sitting Room (St Pauls dome in the water), and the 'London 66' sign was from Reign Of Fire. And the rest should be reasonably guessable.

Having assayed media SF to the best of my not inconsiderable experience for shots of unmistakely genre do-ings juxtaposed with iconic London landmarks, the plain inescapable truth is that 90% of it is in Doctor Who (especially Nu-Who). The only serious suggestion for something it might be missing was Kitten Kong from The Goodies.

yes, I spotted the Bed Sitting Room, thank you. There is also some of the Hammer Quatermas on there, and if I wasn't on my mobile phone I'd watch it again to give you the exact spot.

Still, I accept your gracious apology for calling me wrong when, in fact, YOU were making a wrong assumption about what I was saying. I appreciate it must be hard for you to come down from your high horse long enough to comment anonymously on someone's blog to tell a girl she's completely wrong.

Sorry - wasn't attempting to put you down in any way, nor was I on any high horse, I was simply providing information. I'm the author of the video in question so thought I could supply some answers. I'm *anonymous* because I don't blog and don't have an account, but it wasn't entirely anonymous because I put my name at the end of it.

For the record, there really is no Quatermass in the video. The B&W bit with the dessicated corpse next to the 'Londoners Flee' sign is from the Doctor Who story 'The Web Of Fear'

Bleh, sorry for being grumpy at you. Had a day full of men telling me I don't know what I'm talking about and you were a straw landing on a camel's back.

Use some Hammer Quatermass (the Andrew Keir one) for the sequel! The bits in the underground station are ace!

Thanks for posting this!

Very cool collection of sci-fi moments! Here's hoping London gets the vote for 2014, I put in my $20 for a pre-support. :-)
