Someone's redone [ profile] scrapdog's comments stats programme into a web interface (as his was initially) and it's doing the rounds so, well, ages since I last did it.

Had to hack around with the code in order to get the table to display right within my narrow layout (especially with the longer OpenID profile links I've got nearer the bottom), but, well, it's cool. I've moved the cut text as well, worth noting that if you also do it be careful where to put the beginning and end cut[1]. As we can see, despite starting commenting here less than a year ago, a certain person has raced into second after me, and the rest of the top ten are all people I've met in real life, all but one someone I met before we started reading each others journals, and I've met all but three of the top twenty (I'd like to meet the others, and I've been in the same room as one without either of us realising it at least once).

Interesting, n'est ce pas?

[1] it needs to go between TRs to start and before the /table to finish
Can't sleep. Clowns threatening to eat us. This weird shared brain thing means we both get insomnia at the same time. So how about those annual round up memes that everyone's been doing for the last month?

Right, not going to do "first post" stuff, because I find that pointless. So instead, most commented on post per month:
Posts of the year round up )

From just about everyone already, the annual round up quiz:
Questions 1-25 )
26. What was the best book you read?
Fiction: The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gollancz S.F.) by [ profile] scott_lunch
History: The Glorious Revolution: 1688 - Britain's Fight for Liberty by Edward Vallance
General interest: The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford ([ profile] undercover_econ/[ profile] tim_harford_fd)

Questions 27-40 )

Well, that took awhile to write. It's now silly o'clock in the morning, and we're meeting friends to go shopping in Leeds in less than three hours, think I've had about 4 hours sleep total. Ah well. In case I don't post again till tomorrow, happy new year y'all.
Ah well, good while it lasted. [ profile] snapesbabe is at Kings Cross waiting for her train home, we've spent two weeks together. My room, which normally seems small, has for the last week seemed very cramped. Now it seems empty. Not sure when I'll be able to go up see her again, and she'll find it hard tog et down again for awhile. But it's been great being with her.

Anyway, I thought it's time to repeat a meme that I did ages ago. Can't find it now, but it's the whole 'talk-in-icons-only' thing.
Comment here with no text, just an icon. Reply to others using just icons. Talk, with no text, a uniquely LJ form of discussion. I'll add a corollary; you can use macros as long as they're not too big
Remember: talk to each other because I may fall asleep or be busy at work or whatever.

I may possibly have ImageReady open as I type this. There may be an icon post later on. Possibly. If I stay awake. Actually, on the subject, in the long lists of "things I wish I'd known when I started" things; the keyword for this icon is "Marvin-Life", it's one of the very few icons I've had since almost the beginning that hasn't been replaced. I'm now on my 5th Books icon. But because every time I've replaced it I've called it Books, it shows up on all my old posts and comments using any of my old Books icons. This is deliberate; keep your keywords for usage rather than descriptive, you can replace icons and have the new ones show on old posts. LJ-fu, but I found it out by accident awhileback. Good, innit?
Silly meme from SB:
1. Go into the archives of your LJ.
2. Find your 42nd entry ever. Yes, this may require some counting and basic maths. Deal with it.
3. Link to that entry in a new entry. This is the meaning of your life.
OK then. My return journey from Athens. So, the meaning of my life is to return home from a nice break and fall asleep for 24 hours? Sounds like a plan...

Here's a hint :
The number in the URL is generated by:

N = 256E + R

where N is the number in the URL, E is the number of the entry, and R is
a random integer from 0 to 255.
LJ-fu from [ profile] rho in the comments on a very old entry, for which my Gmail search string was label:lj- from:rho 256 because I just knew. So that means you're lookingfor the entry numbered between 10752 and 11008.

Oh, might as well, posted to [ profile] ihasatardis earlier, it may or may not have cleared the moderation queue: Casting spoiler for the Doctor Who Xmas special (plus it's a big pic, which is more important) )
Hmm, not sure how to interpret this one at all; it's done by the same guy that did the Who Should You Vote For thing back in 2005, and once again methodology is a bit iffy from what I can see. Still, it's says I'm intereting so we're good; some of his other stuff (homepage links) is quite good.
So, matgb, your LiveJournal reveals...

OK, just got in, and rather than do my usual friends list read then attempt to update, if I update first I might actually get an entry in tonight, n'est ce pas? Anyway, a meme from [ profile] frightened that I've always liked the look of before anyway:
explain three icons and three interests. Comment and I'll demand explanations for yours.
She gave me:
Interests: "china miéville"; "george r. r. martin"; "steph swainston".

Icons: "Anarchist Fineas"; "Categories" (Captain Jack quote?); "Temptation".
And, well, I should've known someone would ask about dear old Fineas. Anyway, interests first. Curious that she choe the three authors, but not too hard to explain. China Miéville and the 'New Weird' )

Edit (before posting even), any idea how hard it is to write a post with lots of well researched links when your wireless craps out every five minutes? Yeah, this is fun. The above paragraph? 40 minutes it's taken me to get this far. The connection has been mostly fine for ages, but today? *kicks PC* Please to be imagining there are more links in the above (and below), because there was meant to be.
Steph Swainston and a book signing ). GRRM, board games and evil knights )
Now, those next two paragraphs? Half an hour. With many many kicks. I'm going to save a draft and reboot the machine. FFS.

[1]Thursday, June 7th with a mass signing at Waterstones Piccadilly (5:30pm - 7pm) with Steph Swainston, myself, John Lambshead, Andrew Dennis, Steve Savile, Eric Brown, David Devereux, Jon Courtenay Grimwood and Robert Holdstock. [ profile] tyrell is also planning to be there, [ profile] jantshira / [ profile] faeriecween? I know you both like Steph, pretty sure you liked Jon as well but I forget.

[2] Who, let's face it, should be on everyone's friends list, just because, ok?  Plus, she looked damn hot in the outfit she wore to Sin City Friday night, which is an added bonus in a friend I always think. Don't believe me? Reflections and Opinion. Go read. Plus, did I mention the dinosaurs? Yeah, she plays with dino bones for a living.

ETA: TWO HOURS this post took to get online and edited for my little tags not being closed errors. Two hours. Gah!
watch matgb fight

I just got beaten in a fight because I haven't got enough 'children', so go sign up so I can win some more. He's got it on his own domain now, maybe the server can handle it this time...
Well, I really liked the interest collage thing. Some very strange results it showed up ([ profile] nhw has a lot of countries in his interest list - top image search result for each is frequently their most recent Miss World entry), but it's mostly cool.

But, y'know, you might want to think about things before doing them. Why? Because someone might be watching. Of course, in this case, it's the creator watching it spread and posting explanations of how it works. Which is cool, we like. Thx [ profile] ga_woo.
My Interests Collage! -lotsa images )

It's a bit weird, but it seems to Google [uses Yahoo!] image search and let you cycle through the top ten results. A bit weird seeing images from my site as top result for one, but, y'know, Google-Fu [even if it is Yahoo!, top result for both it seems].

ETA: The meme creator comments below that is' using Yahoo!, and explains the technical details in a manner that, well, is completely beyond me. I'll stick to psephology, I'm ok at at that.

Not dial-up friendly though.

TrustFlow results )
From what I can see from the description and FAQ it's a bit like the pagerank formula for Google, the less 'friends' each of my friends have, the more 'trust' is spread onto them, and those who are friends of more than one of my friends will also get more.

Slightly skewed by me having loads of friends and some of them being inactive accounts ([ profile] petevg's girlfriend being one, for example, he hasn't updated for years (although his article on Taktix is still one of the most linked to and read). Not sure if it's worth anything, but still. Think of it as a "you should friend this person" if you get results below about 100 for anyone.

Iconify me

Jan. 31st, 2006 11:03 pm
OK, after the last silly post, how about another one? Idea ganked from [ profile] active_apathy:
In this post, talk with your icons, and only your icons. Post early, post often, and respond to whomever you want. Type a fullstop or a letter or such in the comment field if LJ tells you you can't post a blank comment.

This is, of course, easier to take part in if you either have 100 icons or aren't using most of yours as one pic with different text. I could redo all my icons to the Marvin scheme.

Edit: Don't just talk to mee, I'm busy most of the time during the day...

Meme 6 handshakes... You know how everyone in the 'developed' world is six people away from everyone else (supposedly, and it's probably not far off). Well, I figured the other day that I'm not that far off everyone on my friends list. So, new meme; copy your friends (not mutual friends) list, and reorganise into number of people apart you are. Delete non-existent people or dummy accounts.

6 handshake meme )

NB, This effectively works if through no other way than elective politics. Everyone knows someone who has met their loacl MP/Congressman/whoever; a "please vote for me" pop into your newsagent counts. I've met several MPs, they've met Tony Blair, he's met most world leaders, they've met your MP, who's met someone you know, etc. In other cases, it's a bit weird, or "small world" links; I was in the same room today as [ profile] ims who knows [ profile] lithium_doll and [ profile] doccy as examples. Now, the question is, can those links be reduced by direct contact? And do we care?
I had a comment today on an old entry I'd completely forgotten about. What entry Mat? I hear you ask. Well, my entry on The Dead Pool 2006, from no less than the creator of the idea in the first place. I'd, um, completely forgotten about it, I'd meant to plug it all the way through December. So, options...
Cut added for poll )
It would be a shame for [ profile] mapp to win by default with no actual prizes. IF'n you want to enter it anyway, go ahead, entries are only valid if enough people vote to continue the competition (poll closes Sunday 29th 25.59), if they do, entries must be made before January 31st 23.59; people that die before closing date don't count, Mark can redo his entry if he wishes. Go on...

Haven't done it for a few months, so, well, I was bored. Besides, it may help settle an argument.
List seven songs... )
Tag 7 people to keep doing it? Ok, I got tagged by [ profile] stonefox84 and [ profile] johnwordsworth. Who's from Bude. So it's only fair to tag [ profile] susannah_banana, what with her being a famous DJ and all (Hi Suze!). So, having tagged a DJ, how about a club promoter? [ profile] ollyb. Meh, bored with explanations. [ profile] nadriel, [ profile] tiredstars, [ profile] faeriecween, [ profile] aliennurai and, um, [ profile] lithium_doll, but only because she keeps proclaiming she's not a goth so I want to know what she does like...

The value of my blog(s)... )
It measures how many blogs link to your blog, but only those that ping, which I think is only paid accounts on LJ. A mention of a named lj user (like [ profile] matgb) links to the /users/username not the username.livejournal so you don't get links to there. But still, tis suitably silly.

Oh, happy birthday today to [ profile] daweaver, tomorrow to [ profile] _mindrape_ and the day after to [ profile] rx_ritalin. On that, can a non-paid user tell me what they get when they go to My LJ Portal? Sheer curiosity.
From both [ profile] tyrell and [ profile] lithium_doll, and she even saved me the effort of looking up Purple.

Xanadu / Kubla Khan - Coleridge )
Because, let's face it, it's the greatest unfinished poem of all time, and Fanthorpe wrote a great send up of his excuses for not finishing it. Still, in this case, the drugs do work, right?

Oh, also first seen on [ profile] tyrell but I didn't have time to do it last night so half the rest of you have done it now...

mom & dad was totally unfair to me Wednesday and now now I can't go to the mall with [ profile] ollyb :-(.

What sucks is that [ profile] blacktone said they wanted to play WoW but [ profile] draxar wanted to do something else :-(.

Oh yeah. I don't know why [ profile] pinkshifter went all psycho over me and [ profile] _mindrape_ having a little fun.

And also I am so going to kick [ profile] bimbeeni out of the house. They got totally drunk yesterday and hurled all over [ profile] mapp!
