While Lib Dems play, Ike trashes Texas

Ye gods, Ike really has done a number on Texas. That's a large set of full screen pictures there, #11 is particularly shocking but the whole lot is scary.

All I can think when looking at those is "holy shit, it's really kicked the crap out of Texas..."

2 is amazing, as well.

approx. 50 foot storm surge apparently, which is...odd for a Cat 2 hurricane making landfall. But I guess it had time to build up.

ah it turned out to only be 15 feet. That makes more sense. Not that a 15 foot storm surge isn't deadly enough.

The last one gets me - for some reason seeing people showing grief and such relief after a huge event always sets me off.

At least the preparation and response seems better than for Katrina, which can only have been a good thing.

And on a lighter note, number 21 - Superman arrives too late to help Houston...

Wow.

Where do you even begin to clean up after these things? It's mind boggling.

Literally, all you can do is just start. Start moving _some_ thing, and it'll just continue from there. I wish I could say I didn't speak from experience, but - as Mat can tell you - I've been there on a couple occasions, with the possibility of more every year. It's only by the grace of God we dodged Ike, ourselves (being Florida), when it was looking to hit us square on.

But that's what you have to do, and what I did after Andrew, and helped do in Mississippi after Katrina, and so on. You just ... start. Because you have to.

One of the people on my f-list is originally from Texas. Her family is still there and had to clear out. I guess so far all that happened was a tree through the roof, which sucks a lot, but compared to the massive flood damage in those pictures could have been a lot worse. Plus, they're all safe and dry at the family's country place or something like that. (Squished like sardines into a very small place with mom, dad, grandpa, and a family that's friends with them, but at least safe.)

Let's hope they're not insured by AIG...

I thought #16 was rather beautiful.

Bloody hell!

Next time it rains so much that my ceiling leaks a wee bit, I'll think twice about complaining!
