I guess you never got whacked by a swan. Trumpeter swans bludgeoned a few of our pelicans to death. The first time it happened the vet was sure hoodlums had hopped the fence and clubbed the pelicans to death.
p.s.: Lazy journalist quoting a forgetful biologist, or perhaps just misquoting: I can think of two species of vertebrate that aren't birds and which have a clubbed appendage. Glyptodont (giant extinct armadillo) and ankylosaurus. Both had clubbed tails.
