Floods just down the road (literally)

What have I let myself in for? As of 15.50GMT today there were 113 flood warnings in the country. 60 of these were in West Yorkshire and 6 of them are in our little bit. Our local paper says: Brighouse submerged under torrent of water. Even the canal has burst its banks, flooding several local places of interest including the basement of Jennie's pub.  She'll be posting about that later I suspect, she's home safe now thanks to an ingenious bus driver.  I have some pictures I might be able to upload later (I can't find the cable in the still-packed boxes), so here are some from the local paper instead:

And these two are of the local ford. By local, I mean at the end of the street and over the road local. It was a lot higher than this before these photos were taken, the mud pattern is way above the building to the left.


Don't get floods like this around my part of the country much. No rivers or canals may possibly explain that though. Fun fun...

Which probably means my old road is a bit underwater, it takes most of the drain off from the south of Wimbledon Common. Apparently the rain'll keep going for a few more days, which'll be fun...

Nothing much in Cambridge itself yet but parts of the Fens are looking rather bad.

Aye, hills are good, there's quite a bit of height between us and the beck but not a huge amount. Fortunately the flood plain is massive, and includes Tesco car park.

Glad you're all OK. We're fine in Skipton (about 30 miles to the North West of Brighouse) although there are a fair few roads round town that are under water. No trouble if you have walking boots and gaters, though!

At some point, I'll learn this local geography thing, it's all confusing. Where I'm from, there's only two directions you can go, north or east, south and west are sea.

So there's all these places nearby and I keep getting them mixed up. Unfortunately, my walking boots are in Devon.

After having seen Skipton and Silsden on the news at lunchtime I figured it was only going to keep coming downhill towards work - fortunately managed to scrounge a lift home at 4.30, just after the Leeds-Shipley and Leeds-Bradford lines were closed.

No; I work in Saltaire and live in York. I spend as little time as I can in Leeds, passing through the station twice a day and stopping off for the odd bite to eat if I've been working late.

We caught Silsden on the news at lunch too! Rang Sarah from work, told her to put News 24 on, but she asked why first, so missed it the first time.

Thanks for the pictures. I hope everyone is okay and that the pub doesn't suffer any further problems.
We don't get flooded here either,generally, although I'm told that our particular part of the city used to be swampland. There are no canals or rivers nearby, and I doubt the Great Lakes would ever flood us out, unless that global warming thing does a number on us. Stay Dry!
