So, I read the headlines, and get this one:
Beatles hailed 'best of British'
and I go to read the full story. I mean, I love Day in the Life, it's a great song. But, um, the full top 10?

Oasis' Wonderwall at 3rd best song of all time? It's shite! The rest I can see as pretty good songs (especially good to see the Pistols there), but, well, most of them aren't 'of all time', they're 'since Rock music was invented', and even then it's dubious. Ah well, popular votes for all time categories are bound to get stupid results.

Oasis were the biggest (UK) band of the nineties. They filled stadiums in a way that no other band had done for the best part of a decade and appealed to (basically) a new generation of music listeners. Wonderwall was probably their biggest song.

I mean, I don't particularly like Oasis either, but they were big and lots of people did/do like them. It doesn't surprise me that they're there - TBH the Pistols, Massive Attack and maybe Robbie Williams surprise me more. But you're right in saying that any popular poll will be messed about with because people have short memories.

Personally I think the Beatles are shite, but I seem to be in a rather small minority on that one.

Most of the list surprised me in different ways; while I love Day in the Life, it wouldn't have occured to me to select it, I'm guessing there was a shortlist to vote on.

I think my opinion on Oasis is always going to be tainted by having seen them back when they were gigging in Manchester, they were shit then and are now. You're right about them being succesful, doesn't mean I have to like it though.

You're definately in a minority on the Beatles thing. Can't find my CDs of them currently, which is annoying me, but still something of a fan.

oh god. kill me now. where do they get these people from?!

i used to read Q. it was the obvious move after smash hits. however, it became a bit too 'lads-mag' for me. i have since moved on to word - it does films, books, music... everything really. and the articles are interesting - you might enjoy it mat, it's an intelligent magazine, they don't patronise their readers. sometimes i get bbc music too. far superior to classicfm.

See, I like Angels, it's a top song. But alternate national anthem? Well, anything is better than Rebellious Scots but. Don't think I ever really read Q, but I'll give Word a shot if I see it.

Tend to rely on the net for reviews these days, even if the review itself is from a print source.
