The whole centralised authority with strong rules (and protection) vs individuals on their own taking risks and teaming up is a theme the whole way through, the brothel is an analogue of the independents, the Guild is the Alliance, etc...
and pretty much with you on the portrayal of birth thing, but also agree with her point that it's not just the media that does it, the Govt has been doing it for decades as well.
