People that actually know me have seen me smile, randomly, at something that I've thought about. No prises for guessing what that normally is mind, but there y'go. SB's been in a bit of a weird mood this evening, and also isn't feeling 100%, but seems to have cheered up now that shrublette has stopped grisling and started being bouncy again. She's exhausted though, Shrub tells me she's asleep upstairs, so I'll be off to check in a bit. We played Eye-Spy earlier, although Shrub's spelling isn't quite up to actually getting things right yet. Very cute though, and seems to be very happy seeing us both together, which is good.
I was in a bit of a strange grump yesterday, not actually upset with anything, just a bit meh with the world; seems to have shifted today—got a fair bit of work done (although I've got to finish coding the site tonight) and have cheered up a fair bit (and Shrub's just come to say hello as I type this). Being cheered up may have been helped by her returning from shopping with a big bottle of Jameson's and a box of organic Thornton's truffles. Y'know, the type of thing she used to love before she developed the "eating these could kill you" caffeine allergy (and a few sips of a cherry alcopop Friday night did knock her out quite badly, quite scary really).
So, yeah—getting used to a major change in my life, and, well, accepting it. Details to work out, things to plan, but overall?
I'm happy. Just, well, wanted to tell the world really.
Keywords: Citizen, Gentleman
Words from Dr Who, idea by calapine, with a background by anabel_icons—I liked this when I first saw it, but she'd messed up the spelling, I animated it but messed up. I was said by Hartnell in The Daleks' Master Plan (reviewed here by nhw, a fairly high google result for the phrase), and is thus cool.
Keywords: Goth, Goth Rome
Animated by me, original art by SJGames—I've just always liked it, but the old version was a bit too fast and fairly static, now I've figured out how to do more frames, why not? NB, when I use it from now on I'll use the 'Goth' keyword, the 'Goth Rome' is merely there for backwards compatibility...
Russian intellectual catechism, from a t-shirt by New Statesman magazine—This comes back to my hatred of the UK libel laws, John Major, then Prime Minister, sued the New Statesman for printing an article asserting he wasn't having an affair with his caterer. The suit was spurious, and it was eventually dropped, but not until after the distributors and printers (because they can get sued to, as can a paperboy) settled out of court, and the Staggers indemnity insurance wasn't good enough.
A few more still to do, but I think I like animating quote icons like this, need to sort the timing out a little on these but overall I'm happy. Opinions?
ETA: Above images are updated versions after feedback, they'll probably get messed around with again.
Anyway, I thought it's time to repeat a meme that I did ages ago. Can't find it now, but it's the whole 'talk-in-icons-only' thing.
Comment here with no text, just an icon. Reply to others using just icons. Talk, with no text, a uniquely LJ form of discussion. I'll add a corollary; you can use macros as long as they're not too bigRemember: talk to each other because I may fall asleep or be busy at work or whatever.
I may possibly have ImageReady open as I type this. There may be an icon post later on. Possibly. If I stay awake. Actually, on the subject, in the long lists of "things I wish I'd known when I started" things; the keyword for this icon is "Marvin-Life", it's one of the very few icons I've had since almost the beginning that hasn't been replaced. I'm now on my 5th Books icon. But because every time I've replaced it I've called it Books, it shows up on all my old posts and comments using any of my old Books icons. This is deliberate; keep your keywords for usage rather than descriptive, you can replace icons and have the new ones show on old posts. LJ-fu, but I found it out by accident awhileback. Good, innit?
Yeah, well. Still, Titanic for the next episode. No Martha though, although she's supposedly going to be back. And Jack will hopefully be over the emo wangsting for the next series of Torchwood, so it might actually be worth watching? Stranger things have happened.
Oh, gratuitous icon pluggage; this one made by mapp, and I really like it.
Of course, the advantage of working from home is I get to bring home the work laptop. The only problem with the work laptop is it's about two years old and my predecessor had been using it heavily. With no maintenance routine or temp file clearout. Let's here it for an 18Gb hard drive with 3.5Gb of temp files and 0.98Gb free space, shall we? Oh, and shall we look at the defragment report and see it's more red than blue Way more red than blue.
Still, it's chuckling along nicely with some maintenence routines, and I've got time now to see what else is loaded on it. Given it's a marketing and print design firm within the IT sector...
Hmm, shall we hear it for a fully registered and legit copy of Adobe CS2. I think we shall.
Now, can anyone point me towards some basic level tutorials for text based gif animations in either ImageReady or PhotoShop? Because, y'know, I could google, but there are far too many decent icon makers out there reading this already, so I thought I'd ask...
On the subject of cool icons, I yoinked this one from mapp earlier, innit cool?
Which makes looking at profiles and pics really hard work; hopefully I'll be ok tonight, it was fine this morning, but if it's bad, um, you'll just have to wait a bit.
Having said that, I had meant to edit the instructions for the meme to allow people to respond on my post with answers, and also to ask me for extra ones to write up there, but I gave up editing - I dislike being told what to post by a meme, and I dislike the idea that by commenting somewhere you're obliged to post something else, so, y'know, asking me stuff doesn't mean you then have to post, etc. I actually really enjoyed writing that up, it's not a bad little meme really, talking about stuff you're interested in that others want to know about. So if you don't want to actually do the meme, but want me to write more about interests and/or icons, ask away; I'm a bit lacking on the inspiration front for stuff to write anyway so, assuming I can get online, it'd be cool.
explain three icons and three interests. Comment and I'll demand explanations for yours. She gave me:
Interests: "china miéville"; "george r. r. martin"; "steph swainston".And, well, I should've known someone would ask about dear old Fineas. Anyway, interests first. Curious that she choe the three authors, but not too hard to explain. ( China Miéville and the 'New Weird' )
Icons: "Anarchist Fineas"; "Categories" (Captain Jack quote?); "Temptation".
Edit (before posting even), any idea how hard it is to write a post with lots of well researched links when your wireless craps out every five minutes? Yeah, this is fun. The above paragraph? 40 minutes it's taken me to get this far. The connection has been mostly fine for ages, but today? *kicks PC* Please to be imagining there are more links in the above (and below), because there was meant to be.
( Steph Swainston and a book signing ). ( GRRM, board games and evil knights )
Now, those next two paragraphs? Half an hour. With many many kicks. I'm going to save a draft and reboot the machine. FFS.
Icons( Fineas - Mad scientist anarchist with a taste for dropping bombs from blimps )
( On the pointless nature of trying to define people by what they are, not who they are )
( On icon philosphy, and LJ sponsored communities )
Thursday, June 7th with a mass signing at Waterstones Piccadilly (5:30pm - 7pm) with Steph Swainston, myself, John Lambshead, Andrew Dennis, Steve Savile, Eric Brown, David Devereux, Jon Courtenay Grimwood and Robert Holdstock. tyrell is also planning to be there, jantshira / faeriecween? I know you both like Steph, pretty sure you liked Jon as well but I forget.
Who, let's face it, should be on everyone's friends list, just because, ok? Plus, she looked damn hot in the outfit she wore to Sin City Friday night, which is an added bonus in a friend I always think. Don't believe me? Reflections and Opinion. Go read. Plus, did I mention the dinosaurs? Yeah, she plays with dino bones for a living.
ETA: TWO HOURS this post took to get online and edited for my little tags not being closed errors. Two hours. Gah!
takhisis wants help dealing with a stupid phisher
What if The Globe had had a message board?
"FUCK YOU SHAKESPEARE! WHERE DO YOU GET OFF KILLING OFF ROMEO AND JULIET? Clearly, you have no conception of how drama is supposed to work, since you won't let your characters be happy!"On the subject of Will, how about some Shakespeare quote icons and bases for making more?
Well, I guess I was wrong when I thought I was looking forward to the new series before. Dude!Todays Indy on Sunday has an interview with John Simm of Sam Tyler/Life on Mars fame in which a few cool things are revealed:via).
How cool is that? In other news, I've been messing around with my icons, and have a question. Those of you that use your own picture as a default, do you ever get used to seeing your own face staring back at you? I'm really not sure I like it.
Also, phone still borked, would whoever is texting me please stop as I CAN'T READ THEM! Will get a new handset when I'm next in the vicinity of a phone shop. It does make trying to contact people a bit of a pain, I may need to do a "what is your number" post (again)...
In addition, innerbrat has made the icon we talked about Sunday, one that will definately be of interest to faeriecween and freddiefraggles
And then we have unimag's guide to American spotting online, well worth a read:
Food Obsession(via metaquotes, which has been a bit poor recently)
No, this isn't an 'Americans are fat' comment5; I'm talking about posting pictures of food. And talking about food. At every opportunity. When a British person posts about having a meal, we post about what happened during the meal - anecdotes that were told, stupid stuff that happened, people getting insulted, Aunt Gladys choking to death on the meringue... entertaining things like that.
Americans, on the other hand, post about the food. With pictures of the food. If we're especially lucky, the people who were actually eating the food might get mentioned (in passing), but only if it doesn't shift the focus away from the food too much.
London Calling( Anyone about in London next week? )
Icons, LJ and games designers( Livejournal: the small world )
NeverwhereIt's a free download at his site, Postmortem Studios. In fact, it's got a lot of background stuff as well, so non-gamers like faeriecween and jantshira may be interested regardless as, y'know, it's Neverwhere.
New Friends( Must. Stop. Adding. People... )
Dreddcon: 6.5% proof!( Anyone fancy some Oxford silliness? )
So, I've got a week and a bit off work, I'm off to see nearly_everyone in Germany, then spending a week bumming around London and LJ has provided me much amusement thus far last few days. Also, strictlytrue also went to Ottery, and has pictures. LJ's cool, most of the time. It's just a damn shame that it's dying.
Oh yeah, the beau_bo_d_or_fd feed has started working again after the LJ crash, Rumsfeld has resigned and the Dems have retaken Congress. I'm off to try and work out what the swing was...
So, in another probably not safe for work series, via flemco: The Sex Tutor - joining the Mile High club.
Oh, the other answers, for those that didn't click the 'view answers' link in the poll, were Twin Peaks and Pratchett. I'm thinking some people missed the name of the poll. Meh, it was silly. And drop down polls are completely useless, they give the same results as radio buttons. Weird.
tyrell linked to the IMDB page for Hogfather. Sky One, Xmas day. Guess I'd better visit my parents at Christmas then. He also linked to the filmmakers gallery of promo shots. Oh yeah baby. I mean, I know that fancying the actress playing Susan is sorta, y'know, predictable? But, well, d'you blame me? Anyone know if Michelle Dockery can actually act? The rest of the cast is good (David Jason as Albert? Cool!), and Death looks very cool.
Oh, I'm about 2/3rds of the way through Wintersmith. Wee Free Men was good but didn't grab, Hat Full of Sky was better, and Wintersmith is very good. I guess the whole written for the audience thing kicks in a little with the first one? Anyway, how does it go? Oh yeah. Nae King, nae Quinn, nae Laird, nae master...
Also? nmg gives us Mark Harrison's The Travellers, and for those of you who like their browsing uninterrupted by crappy pop ups that kill options like bookmarking, this link is the start of the actual strip. Why do webdesigners still think that forcing new windows to read their content is in any way a good idea?
Make your own icons easilyShe was bored today, it seems, so she played around with some php scripts (something I still can't get my head around, then, I'm not really trying). She made this, fairly simple icon maker. It'll insert text, greyscale, border, etc. All the things you want from an icon, in one easy place.
If anyone has bases or simple images that make good all round icons to share, give her a shout, she'd definately appreciate it. Me? I've used it to finally update all my category icons, I'd been sent decent copies of the Fineas art awhileback, now I have all my categories back in non-teeny versions. I also have, um, about 15 alternates saved, witht he same text on different pics. I may have got carried away. I'm definately not going to go back and start doing other things in a few minutes. No, not me. Not at all.
Livejournal announces (belatedly) project to improve User InterfaceLet's face it, the LiveJournal userinterface and navigation system, well, sucks. After freddiefraggles pointed me at it, I've got used to the new beta navigation layout, it's a lot less ugly than Dystopia, although I still hate pop up menues. But, they're now going to give the whole site a going over, to make it easier to use and find your way around. Don't know about you, but I get lost, regularly, when trying to do stuff I don't use that often. I hate certain aspects of how it works. That post is rather long, and contains the usual amount of "we don't like change, it was good enough for me when I started" bollux. I have no doubt, whatsoever, that I will dislike some of the changes they end up making. I have no doubt that some of them will be worse than the existing method. I also suspect they'll fix bits like that fairly quickly.
But, overall, LJ is very difficult, at times, to use, and it breaks a number of usability rules in places. So, a tentative thumbs up to the project. I will, of course, bitch about the details.
In the meantime, I have a new userpic for this post. D'you like it?
This is (probably) a good thing. Admittedly, I'm still barely a third of the way through his first one (borrowed from nadriel). Hmm...
6 Apart has launched a new service, called Vox. It's, um, Livejournal with a different name aimed at old people. Um, why? You bought Livejournal, and now you're launching a different version? Why not market the one you've got better?
I decided not to take part in the whole delete your journal in protest at the nipplegate thing. 24 hours switched off may have put across a message, I hope that 6A listen to sense and back down/apologise/sort out a proper Abuse team, but, at the end of the day, I just don't care enough, those kicking up a fuss were being just as obtuse as those causing the original problem. I did think about it a lot. I nearly put up a poll as well.
Oh, weather reports. Top "hours of sunshine" and temperatures last few days. Torquay. Where do I live? Torquay. What do I hate the most? Hot weather. Still, got a letter from teh council, someone has complained about downstairs' music. I think I might be backing up that one, she's got it on again, it's loud, crap and she's shouting her head off as well. Everyone OK out there?
|Name||MatGB (43)||Thursday 13th April (68)||0 : 1|

Second, I have figured how to use the Gimp to make transparencies (so simple when you get it, but so not easy to find) and also to animate gifs. Um, why is gif animating an obscure save option?
Still, cool beans, I have made an icon.
Anyone reading nolittleengland will have noticed I've messed the template up. Apart from the colour scheme (bad idea, never should use colours), it should be perfect. Except Internet Explorer doesn't resolve the CSS properly. Set width margins; that gives a variable width centre column you useless software! Gah! It looks awful. It's either go back to the old, badly coded columns, or fudge it by putting an invisible table to not let the window resize below 1000px for IE users only. That would be a bad idea. Have I mentioned IE sucks? Oh, I think I did.
Apparently, it's spring. Spring? Will you turn up soon? My flat is utterly, utterly frozen. OH, and my internal bodyclock thinks that the correct time to sleep is 5.30am. My alarm clock thinks the time to wake up is 8.30am. 6 hours sleep in 2 days not good.
Weird; why does getting more userpics cheer me up? I didn't care for them at all for ages, I only used 3 and was happy. Now I have 34, and 15 blatently wasn't enough. This may tempt me to keep the paid account next August. They may have to do a bit more though.
So, I get to choose more do I? Really ought to get around to sorting out how to insert text properly with the GIMP.
