There's significant movement on the 'abolish safe seats' meme this week, and a preferential system would be damn useful.
Thing is, if you're in a safe Conservative seat currently, same as with Steen, it's a safe seat, if it couldn't be won in '97 or '01, it'll take significant boundary or demographic changes to unseat the git.
I can't actually say I definitely voted tactically in '01, let alone at any other time. Regardless of other situations, I was also voting for the best candidate, but it was definitely a distinct factor.
