The timelines I've seen, including on Teg Graun, indicated that clashes started at some time after 8pm, and I've seen reports that the police had riot shields at the protest itself, from 5pm onwards.
I obviously don't know what to believe, but even if the above vid isn't the actual spark, they've got someoen surrouned on the ground and are beating the crap out of them, even if that's not the start of actual violence, it's clearly out of order and when it got out would've made things a lot worse.
