The Xmas Factor: best seasonal song ever?

Ye gods, what a silly publicity stunt for a radio show, running a silly online poll in a cheap rip off of some TV show I've not watched. Still, what do we expect from Capital Gold:
[1]Queen may have once been Mat's favourite band ever. He currently denies this having discovered a sense of musical taste. However, there are still a number of songs by them that rate as all-time greats, even if they are cheesy pomp rock. The song competing against FONY isn't one of those greats.
[2] Oh yeah, aside. I mentioned I'm using Deepest Sender to make Braindumps for memes and links I want to write about later, yes? Well, um, I currently have 12 posts in the line up. I'm assuming you don't want them all at once?
The day's match is launched during the Capital Gold Breakfast Shows. You then have 24 hours in which to vote for your favourite song out of the day's choices.Thing is? The finalists are some Queen song[1] and Fairy Tale of New York. Given yesterdays discussion, the results should be conclusive, but it appears that there are some fans of that godawful Queen song. As I look, it's exactly 50/50. So go make a choice. No pressure of course. Vote.
The daily champs will move into the next round until we have the 2006 Xmas Factor Champion. The winner will be announced on Friday December 22.

Date: 2007-Sep-12, Wednesday 09:12 (UTC)No, I'm not bored and going through Mat's tags in an ad hoc manner this morning, why do you ask?
I have to say that while I agree with Mister Mat on this particular pair of songs, the proposition that The Pogues are better than Queen in general is just ODD... Lyrically, the Pogues were great, but musically? They had ONE SONG, which they did over and over at varying tempos/in varying keys [/possibly mild exaggeration]. There's not a single Queen album that doesn't cover a bewildering variety of styles, and always with extreme competence. Yes, even Hot Space.
Personally, I think there's quite a big streak of Mister Mat that doesn't want to admit to liking some stuff because he thinks they're uncool. I'm happy to embrace my uncoolness. I know I'll never be hip, so I don't bother trying... [/intentional provocation]

Yeah, I have the best of. And (as I may have mentioned before) Fairytale is one of the few Christmas songs I can listen to without descending into a slough of despond and bitterness due to years of working in retail. But I still think you have issues with admitting you like uncool things. Although you seem to have admitting a small fondness for me, so... ;)

Date: 2006-Dec-21, Thursday 20:02 (UTC)Face it folks, Queen weren't really *that* good, were they? Bohemian Rhapsody was no more than nonsensical cheesy bombast (albeit a pretty good example thereof), and was about the fourth-best track on A Night At The Opera. This one up against the mighty Kirsty & co is no Bo Rap. In fact it's not even Fat Bottomed Girls.

Date: 2006-Dec-21, Thursday 21:00 (UTC)I heard it playing at a Christmas party I went to, all that time ago.
I actually rather liked it at the time!

Date: 2006-Dec-22, Friday 03:30 (UTC)I could be bothered to vote for Queen. I quite like that particular song, and it's far better then the Pogue.

Date: 2006-Dec-22, Friday 11:29 (UTC)Looks very interesting. Would be more useful to me if it was a standalone application that could post to many journals at once, but it still looks useful. Maybe one day I'll be able to install firefox at work for more than just "compatability testing" purposes.

Date: 2006-Dec-22, Friday 11:34 (UTC)And yeah, moving away from full admin priviledges with every plugin I want to whatever I get wherever I end up will be annoying, odds of getting an IT manager prepared to let me loose very small methinks. Fx is (slowly) gaining grounds, but the bigger the company, the more hidebound the software requirements are it seems :-(
