I've got a nice little post in my head about Torchwood, what's right and wrong with it, etc etc. I like it, but it's deeply flawed and nowhere near as good as it should be. In the meantime, James Graham has a solution:
One suggestion just made to me is to make Lembit Opik a consultant for the show, given that he is an authority on Wales, intergalactic phenomena and sex with odd-looking aliens.
Nasty. True, but nasty.

I've only seen one episode of Torchwood, which was one involving people falling through time from the 1950s, or something. (I missed the beginning, so the plot details were a little vague.) I actually quite enjoyed it, and it knocked spots off every time I've seen Star Trek do the same story - The Neutral Zone in TNG (with people in cryogenic stasis who wander onto the bridge as the Enterprise is on the brink of war with the Romulans) and The '37s from Voyager, with Amelia Earhart and Voyager's ability to do really bloody stupid things in order to work humans into the bloody Delta quadrant. Ooh, ranty.

Given that I enjoyed that episode, should I not watch any other episodes at all in case it spoils it for me?

pffffffft!

I was nonplussed by Torchwood - Charlie Brooker in the Guardian summed it up nicely in that it feels like an adult version of a childrens programme, like a hidden episode of Postman Pat when he finally slips Mrs Goggins one as the village shop explodes in the background.

Torchwood is quite like Snakes On A Plane.

Ignore the glaringly obvious plot holes and take it completely at face value (without thinking about it at all) and you get a show that is quite enjoyable.

Don't let what has been said already spoil the series for you. Watch the rest & make your own mind up.

(I do think the amount of cursing in the final couple of episodes was unnecessary though.)

the cyber suit seems designed to appeal to fetishists above all else

Heh - [livejournal.com profile] britishcyberman had something to say about that at the time.

Oh yes. We like Tosh. A lot. Yeah, she's slept with an alien, but everyone makes mistakes...
