If I recall my history correctly, we didn't fight William III, so perhaps it isn't an invasion if we surrender...?

No, you do recall correctly, James II took the army out to Salisbury then panicked, decided to run back to London, leaving the army in the command of John Churchill. Churchill was outnumbered and outclassed, most of his troops were raw, William had seasoned Dutch and mercenary troops.

Churchill betrayed his oaths and surrendered; William disarmed his men, had them march at the back of the column and ordered them camp outside London while he went in.

But battle being fought is irrelevent; if you cross the border, you invade, it was an invasion.

It just suited all sides to write history as if it wasn't for quite a long time, changed now, even The Little Book of Patriotism writes it up as an invasion, let alone all the decent history books. The study of history is frequently just the study of another times politics, it's why it fascinates me so.

Don't forget that London was occupied by the French for most of 1216 and 1217. (OK, so everybody does forget this. And eventually the French gave up and went home. But it still happened.)

Aye; Matilda? It's not my period; te important bit is that we've been invaded since 1066, and more than once, the rest are details.

There are a few exceptions, but mostly I'm of the opinion that history starts in approx 1600, everything else is pre-history and build up, but I'm a bit strange like that...

(1389 battle of Kosovo Polje being an exception that made a difference, for example)
