Via Andrew, is it just possible that Catherine Tate might not be an awful choice?
ETA: From the comments. [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat and [livejournal.com profile] ms_ntropy have a "Hugh Jackman list", I'm now declaring SB and I have an "Alan Rickman list", because his version is oh so much better...

I suspect she's going to have an objection, but, y'know, negotiating positions...

THAT is evidence that she's NOT going to be excruciating?

But even when she's doing the sonnet, she's gurning and enunciating badly and... GRARGH. Although I may be spoiled for that sonnet by being over-exposed to this version...

OTOH, the other vid in the entry you link to is hilarious. Even if it's totally non-Who.

I dunno, the "aksed"s sounded ridiculously unnatural and forced, earlier on in the clip, too. I liked it when she disappeared, though :S

*goes back to listening to Alan Rickman*

The video was worth it just for David's pronunciation of "literachurrr", though!

I'll have a look for the subtitle file - may or may not be available, depending on whether it was pre-prepared or done live! I think there's a decent chance, though.

Yes, you are being too optimistic.

* hug *

But that's a healthy balance thing there, I think, for my world-weary cynicism.

Oh my. Yes, um, see what you mean.

See, and you're not even a GIRL.

* fans self *

Rickman might not be all that sexy to LOOK at, but Jesus, that voice...

You do realise that with this level of teasing, by the time you actually get up here next week you'll be lucky to get the front door shut before I leap on you and ravish you?

Just to clarify - the Hugh Jackman list is not about who can recite sonnets the best.

Although, y'know, he would be very good at sonnets.

Is there a transcript of that?

Even without the accent, there were some words and phrases that I just didn't get.

I did like Shakespeare followed by, "Bite me, alien boy!"

Oh sweet jesus - no, I managed 3 minutes of that, which to be fair is the longest I've ever been able to tolerate the Tate, but no. Come back Bonnie Langford, all is forgiven.

It was the point where she said 'am-est I bovvered?' that my tolerance was stretched beyond breaking point. I just hate her face. And her voice. And her acting.

I hope they do an Adric on her!

Did I mention that I'm going to be the next Doctor Who? The BBC don't know it yet, but a lot of comedy club audiences seem to think it's a good idea. We'll get Billie Piper back when I take over. Her career will have floundered and I'll save her from pantomime!

Yup, I got that far and then had to turn off too. I simply can't stand her.

They do seem to bounce off each other ok, but I don't think she's a good actress (shouting != acting), I don't find her funny, and she bugs the shit out of me. Not ideal. She really would have been my last choice to play his assistant, TBH. And that's not hyperbole.

Plus it seems like a wasted opportunity; the role should really go to someone who hasn't already got an established career, to my mind.

Tennant's a pro. And it's not hyperbole at all. Anne Widdecombe would be a better assistant.

And yes, it should go to new talent. 'Talent'! What am I saying?

Tate might not be an awful choice, she may well be able to act. However she's playing Donna. Not a good thing at all.
