The National Routeing Guide (http://www.ljtop.com/the_fear_213078436.html) is the inevitable end-point to this train (arf!) of thought. And that way, madness lies...
Reminds me of the LRT bus ticket I used to get quite regularly in Edinburgh: "Beyond Mornings", it had on it. I always meant to send one to Mike Rohan.
Quite easily - even via London, Waterloo->Paignton will cut out Reading entirely. I'm fairly sure Virgin X-Country will go via B'ham New Street to Paignton via Bristol.
Fair enough—Neil says similar above, my routeplanning didn't come up with it, and it didn't occur to me to ask, the ticket was bought at an SWtrains station so maybe he was plugging their routes exclusively.

I suppose you could do something like: Kings Cross, Grantham, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Paignton... :)

Its cheaper because it's about 30mins to an hour slower.
