So then. In 2002, I got an email from an obvious loon I'd never met. If he organised a [livejournal.com profile] warlord_ccg event in a climbing hall[4] in his home town, would I be interested in attending and bringing friends? Where's his hometown? Muenster, Westphalia (that would be as in 'Treaty of', possibly one of the most significant documents in, oh, world history?). I didn't even have a passport. Massive fuss getting a passport, but eventually [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu, [livejournal.com profile] nadriel, [livejournal.com profile] malkavelli, Vince[livejournal.com profile] the_prince[8] and I managed to get there. My first trip abroad as a functioning adult[6].

Best weekend away[1] ever. Seriously great fun[7]. I've sinced travelled to similar events all over Europe (waking up in a Paris bed next to Malk was weird, watching the premiere of the BSG mini-series in an Anaheim hotel room with Vince was slightly weirder). But the original event remains the best.

Last year was the fifth and, we thought, the last. This morning I got an email. From the same loon.

Didn't know how to react—for a start, I need to be saving up the pennies, second, it'd mean a weekend travelling that wasn't to go visit Jennie, and, well, I'm not 100% sure I can afford it anyway. Except when we chatted earlier, [livejournal.com profile] snapesbabe said she'd like to come.

So, um, [livejournal.com profile] granjero? That'd be two decks I'd like to borrow this time Mr Player Design Team member...

[1] Exception: weekends spent with Jennie don't count in this assesment, that'd be cheating and unfair to anything not involving her.

[2] Is it wrong that my first reaction wasn't to the post and comments, but to admire the absolutely awesome redesign? They've also done up the official company site as well. With a multiple theme switcher. And Wordpress. A bit like I suggested to them aaages ago. Good good.

[3] Different loon.

[4] Hence the name of the event. I mentioned he was a loon, right?[5]

[5] Yes, I am going back and adding footnotes out of order, give me a reason not to...

[6] And also my best driving experience ever. Because what they say about German roads? So very true. Even in a hire car.

[7] This may have been assisted by me being treated by everyone as a minor celebrity, big fish/small pond, the game was young and I was "MatB from the Temple Of Lore"—I even had a staff t-shirt, turned out we didn't need to promote the site, they were all members. Of course, the next year we went they were used to me, it was Paul-the-UK-champion that was the celeb Arne promoted. I seem to have a habit of teaching people to play games and watch them become so much better than me it's silly.

[8]ETA: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nannyo, had no idea he had an LJ, let alone that he'd been on here for years.

Looks like I may not have quite managed to quit the CCG habit after all. Oh, locked post, purely because I may decide to not tell Arne I'm (hopefully) going. To Be Decided.

Is the Vince that you speak of very tall, does Maelstrom, works for GCHQ? Surely there can only be the one Vince seeeeeeriously into Warlord events? I think I know him through an entirely different circle of friends. He is [livejournal.com profile] the_prince on here, although he posts about once every two years...

Am unsure whether that's heart-meltingly sweet, or sensible self-preservation from you ;)

* smooch *

I haven't been abroad since I was at uni. I'm quite looking forward to it.

WILL YOU STOP ALL THE SNUGGLES AND SMOOCHES!

Some of us are home alone* and missing snuggles and smooches from their better halves.

* Alone except for the kids, but they go back to school tomorrow. HURRAH!

Ah, it's ok. She's back now and snuggles and smooches have been much in evidence.

Apparently my kids are now scarred for life.

Silly kids. How do they think they came into being in the first place?

2 decks? You're assuming I'm not going to be providing Alice with one? I'll make sure that I've got some user friendly decks with me, but I'm leaving the teaching onus to you. Just remember that Alice reckons a low cut top is worth an average of a win and a draw over a seven round tournament.

Let me know when you book flights, I'll probably look at getting on the same plane as you. That's assuming you catch it, of course.
