Liveblogging? Pointless crappy chatroom more like

ETA at the top: We're doing a proper liveblog anyway:
http://www.liberalconspiracy.org/2008/11/05/us-elections-08-key-moments/
So, two of the mainstream politics blogs I hang around on a lot are 'liveblogging' the US elections, and I'm supposed to be contributing.
Liveblogging? That means actually writing content on the blog, using the comments box for information, and updating the post with important information as and when you get it. It was
nosemonkey's liveblogging of the London bombings that got me into the idea of blogging in the first place. I think it's a great thing.
So my favourite blogs are liveblogging the election results. Cool.
Except they're not. They're using www.coveritlive.com. It's a fucking flash embed chatroom.
Wonderful. We're using the wonders of modern technology to do something you could do on AOL 15 fucking years ago. And you can't scroll back to backread, so if you move to a different screen then come back you miss stuff. Stephen is at least updating the main post, but he's disabled the comments so you have to use the outdated unimpressive POS 'liveblog' software. FFS, I had been looking forward to contributing to both sites. Ah well, back to the email mailing lists, if we're going to use 15+ year old ideas, might as well use one that works.
What a peice of shit.

Date: 2008-Nov-05, Wednesday 02:16 (UTC)BTW... as a NC resident, have to agree to being happy about Dole losing and hoping we manage to pull out an Obama vote by the time the polss are done. A couple of areas closed the polls an hour late in NC due to earlier technical difficulties with the voting booths.

Date: 2008-Nov-05, Wednesday 02:36 (UTC)NC has lost a LOT of jobs in recent years and the state has several military bases with National Guard and Full Time military getting hit hard by Iraq. I think these two issues are the reason, not the attack ads.
I am personally a military brat, and while I support our troops in there efforts... they are doing the job they were given, I do NOT agree with the Republican foreign policies.
What really nailed the coffin shut was the recent issues with the Banks. Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the US, right behind NY. A large number of people lost jobs and homes with the recent bubble burst which followed years of textile jobs being sent overseas. This is the real issue with Dole. Lose of jobs without attempts to provide alternative options.
Granted... the attack ads didn't help my opinion. Seriously, can we leave religion out of it already? Yes, it's the South, but it's the New South... grow up and stop picking on people for their beliefs. (( Hayes does deny it though and claims to be a christian. *shrug* ))

Date: 2008-Nov-05, Wednesday 09:56 (UTC)okay, okay!
Date: 2008-Nov-05, Wednesday 14:05 (UTC)Fwiw, I think it worked a lot better than a traditional live-blog in the main post could've, where the content and comments are separated out. The disadvantage is that it becomes cliquey, as many of us know each other (either virtually or actually), so, yes, it becomes a chat-room.
But ultimately I don't think folk were relying on LDV to bring them the breaking news. We were all following it via Internet/TV/radio, and most of us will have had a number of sites open simultaneously. No point LDV trying to compete with the MSM on this one, so better to provide a service for 'our' community.
Well, that's what i think anyway.
cheers, stephen
