Blog Networks and 'similar blogs'
2008-Nov-24, Monday 23:55So, having joined the network of a new Facebook friend[1], I thought I'd check out my page. Still got 8 'fans' and not verified as me. But there's a new widget (see sidebar) that can auto confirm it's me and give a direct link to it for new readers. Probably worth it, I thinks.
So, having installed it, verified myself, and everything, I follow the link to the website they've set up to support it, NetworkedBlogs.com. Not bad, and possibly a useful resource (need to explore a lot more). But, as is always the case, the 'similar blogs' category throws up interesting results from the algorithm. Here's a screenshot:
Dizzy Thinks! Phil "doesn't think" Hendron's tory imbecility is a 'similar blog'? Help me[2]. I'm guessing the algorithm is based around the blog description, but it may be based around what other readers have in their network. Which is a little off putting, having looked at the readers, who I thought were sensible types for the most part. So, if it is based on what the readers like, um, can a lot of you join my network so that it knocks the pile of ignorant ill-informed ranting off of my 'similar' list please? I mean, an old gadget once said that the politics blog was similar to Harry's Place, but the author of the gadget did say it was good at finding evil twins, so that was OK. But Dizzy? Ye gods no.
Help me!

andrewducker, who most of you should probably be reading as he posts more than me currently, on frequently similar topics.
[2] Before I get accused of too much negativity, and for the benefit of those who've not had the misfortune, "Dizzy" is a "top-rated" Conservative blogger who was when he set up heavily promoted by the self-publicist in chief Iain Dale. I was never that impressed, thinking there were much better written and better informed Tory bloggers out there at the time (mostly defunct now, unfortunately). But then 'Dizzy' joined in with the ongoing Dale/Guido/Tim Ireland blogwar. With a simple assertion that because Tim works in Search, he must be a spammer, all spammers are evil thus Tim can be ignored.
Now, for an ill informed blogger on the receiving end of one too many spam comments trying to skew search results, associating one of the country's top SEOs with the spam done by "SEO" firms would simply be a sign of ignorance easily fixed. But Tim is most certainly not a spammer, and has worked with me in the past to help deal with such arseholes as they give his reputable and necessary calling a bad name.
The thing is of course, "Dizzy" sells himself as an informed blogger. Even moreso, he's an IT professional. For a supposed IT professional to make such an ignorant, schoolboy error is a sign of both gross incompetence and utter irrelevance.
Dizzy doesn't think, and I'd rather not be associated with him. Help me out? Danke.
