I had one of the medical kits mentioned in that article that's horrible if it's not humor. My sister and I were doctors to our dolls, who got horribly sick and needed hospitalization often, but fortunately we could treat them! For we had the tools!

I tend to agree with Kate Harding on the Assange thing.

Also, anyone using the word "just" with reference to a broken condom needs a fatal STD. There's no "just" about it.

Regarding Winterval: I live in Birmingham and I was a child then, and I still understood what was going on. It was a name given to the entire November-February festive period, which contained a lot of celebrations both secular and religious (it turns out people like to eat food and set stuff on fire when it's cold and dark). Nobody cancelled Christmas.

Also the people whining about the lack of religion in modern Christmas celebrations need to realise what indie bands have known for a long long time - you can have a huge share of the market or you can have authenticity. You can't have both.

Hell yes! Brethren, can we not peacefully coexist, and share our eating and setting-on-fire celebrations, so we can have as much of both as humanly possible?

According to yesterday's Thinking Allowed people have been complaining that christianity is being left out of christmas and it's being commercialised for at least two hundred years. And in the mid-19th century they were complaining that it was Dickens' fault (or at least some of it was).

I think I have just lost years of my life to Andrew Rilstone. What a fantastic blog.
