MatGB vs geekery, scrabble and a scorer that cheets...

K, I'm coming down with the bug every other bugger in the office has had, so I'm just finishing covering the welfare desk then going home. In the meantime, Sunday...
Got to GameSoc late, (most of the people that said they'd ring did, which meant I was delayed by answering the phone to people who were making sure I wouldn't be late- that and getting angry about an ID cards article I'd read while eating brunch) and met up with
nearly_everyone, people were playing Tongiaki and Pirate's Cove, so I watched and then we played Scrabble. Well, 4 of us did,
mapp insisted on scoring.
Scrabble:
freddiefraggles,
silentgreeneyes,
draxar and me, with
paulatpingu helping a bit (and pointing out obvious words like Golf). Essentially, I hadn't played the game at all since
susanna_banana made me play it with her then boyfriend years ago. Still remembered how to win. It's all about board position, nothing to do with good words or using all the tiles. Put a K on a triple letter, even crappy words score good. Putting KIS in front of
draxar's MET gave me an early lead. To finish though, I managed to get Raj, with the J on triple word and making up two words, as well as the A going in front of sexual. Um...
That alone gave me more points that
draxar scored in teh game. Officially however, our scorer tells me that Team Circus (ie Pink) managed 270ish. Me, he didn't get past 50... Good game tho. Fun, but not a game I want to play regularly.
Fluxx: Bloody silly game.
paulatpingu wins be cheating (I think). Always fun, always silly.
Doom, the Board Game: Now, you know this is going to go wrong when the first question someone asks is "When is PVP enabled"? Co-operative game, 3 marine players try to complete a mission (in this case get off the base) and fighting passed all the gribblies controlled by the 4th player, in this case
silentgreeneyes, who had at least played it before.
mapp and
draxar got all the good guns by going first, I'm stuck with a pistol, and I got blown up twice by grenades thrown by my supposed 'friends'. Oh, and
draxar got shut in the back by a certain scorer. We died. Badly.
Fun, very Space Hulk like, worth another blast sometime but nothing to take seriously.
Domaine: Written (IIRC) by the same guy that made Settlers of Catan, with artwork by Franz Vohwinkel (who I've met), one of those games that looks complicated but really isn't.
Amun Re: Egyption pyramid building. it's just a game I like. There's enough interaction and ways to 'get' people, but you can still plan your turn and make decisions. Simple, but effective. Much better than Monopoly. We finished on time as well. Can anyone remember who won?
So, 5 different games played in 8 hours. That's pretty good, very cool. Thx all for a pretty good day. Right, time to vacate the office, I actually finished work half an hour ago but, well, Simon's telling stories from his cruise work...
Did I mention I'm ill? It's man-flu for sure, but, well, I'm still ill.

Date: 2006-Jan-10, Tuesday 06:28 (UTC)It probably didn't help that my lunch consisted of skittles, smarties and cups of sugary tea. And then the lemon cake. I shouldn't play games when I'm feeling slightly giggly.
