You're auto defaulted to receive nudges. a nudge lets you prod friends who haven't updated, by sending them an email. even if they've set comment notification off. Even if they want to keep the existence of their journal secret. Even if they're dead, in hospital, whatever.

Essentially, if I haven't updated for two weeks, and you're an LJ "mutual friend", you have access to my email address, and if you look around you have access to my mobile phone, work phone, work email. You can even comment on a recent entry to ask me if I'm ok.
But if you send me an impersonal nudge, well, that's not being a friend. Took me awhile to figure out why it was a bad idea, but various comments on News, Suggestions and elswhere (check
daweaver's most recent post for links) have convinced me this is an ill thought out and intrusive procedure, that may be open for abuse. Mostly, I like LJ, the community of the team, the open source nature of the project, the way they respond and contribute. Mostly.
