It's cos Cockatrices kill you stone dead before you can do anything about it.

The key is to find a shrine and then just repeatedly pray to it, as there's no upper limit on hit points. Then whenever you're low you can run back to the shrine and recharge.

Oh, and try and avoid combat if you don't have a sword, sheild and armour.

Can you tell what I spent yesterday afternoon at work doing?
