Hello and welcome, I guess

This is not my first post. This is just redated so it's not at the top of my journal all the time.

I'm Mat. This is my personal journal, the fun stuff. I also write in a few other places, including Not Little England (on UK politics) and TaKtiX (about gaming).

For more about me, your best bet is to read the bio and Userinfo. This post is mostly here so I can find all the tags I use easily, it may get more useful stuff in the future. It's not a 'Friends Only' Journal, but I do filter some stuff. Oh, if you're using Internet Explorer, the layout looks fugly. It's something to do with the default layout I'm using, not got time to delve into the code and fix it; not going to apologise, it's my journal, go here and get help.

I expect you know your page only looks "fugly" in IE because your images for "Responses", "Comment" etc are broken. Not something to be proud about, that you're using a browser which handles a broken page better than another: One of the biggest causes of poorly written HTML now is because people got used to IE's 'best guess' fix for bad code.

I would hope you'd keep up your consistancy, without that you just turn into an "anti-corporate" whinger, and I don't think you're one of those.

The broken image links are in the default S2 layout I'm using, and I don't want to learn to recode S2 on top of everything else I'm working on.

At some point, I'll get rid of them, but I didn't know that they were there until I loaded the page from work; I test sites with IE, but default layouts didn't make it clear I was supposed to be linking to images. It's on the to-do list. Near the bottom, but there.

Oh yeah; not an anti-corporate whinger, just a libertarian socialist with free market tendencies and an ability to confuse...

Hey Mat,

Just to let you know that I upgraded my blog to WordPress 2.0 today. Just letting you know, if you want to have another go at setting up the feed thing, the upgrade might have fixed it.

(Incidentally, did you try http://www.doctorvee.co.uk/wp-rss2.php as well as http://www.doctorvee.co.uk/feed/ ? There might have been something up with the rewrite rules or something...)

That's because there aren't any images, I messed up when I did the template, Firefox simply displays the alt text that I thought it was asking for.

It's been on my 'web based things to fix' list for ages, but, um, because I'm lazy, distracted and using a browser that it looks ok on, it keeps getting dumped down the pile...

Oh, never objected to friending people, although I don't tend to write as much about politiccs on here anymore, my RL friends either find it boring or read the 'blog anyway; [livejournal.com profile] nolittleengland is taking up more of my time that, perhaps, it should...

Yes, I think I saw the link earlier on Nick's rss feed, but didn't chase it at the time since I was busy. Twice, though, and one has to follow these things up ;)

It's great that this is taking off! There's clearly so much momentum hanging around, waiting for someone to give it voice and direction ...

I write a bunch of nonsense on my LJ, punctuated by occasional, very heartfelt political or politically-related (I work in higher education) rants. Feel free to skip some/all. I'm not sure how much of it I'd read myself if it was someone else's; sometimes I just want to write stuff down.

Hey Mat! I dunno if you remember me or not, but we met when Lj switched URL's for everyone.

I have some questions that i thought you might be able to answer, or else point me somewhere to get them answered, but i'm not sure.

My questions are about a blog that i'm setting up, and blogging programs and the like. I won't bore ya with all the gory details unless this is somthing that you think you might be interested in helping me with?

Go ahead; Blogger is free and very easy to use, Wordpress is free, reasonably easy to use and requires a MySQL database, Movable Type costs money, and is better supported than Wordpress.

Blogs need to be hosted on your main domain because they help you get pagerank, and beyond that, what d'you want to know?

Well, i've got a blog started (http://peggy-hall.com/). (You may or may not be able to view it from where you are - I just created it and registered the domain name yesterday) i've curently got livejournal going into there. I like the appearance, and if making a pretty web page was my goal, i'd just leave it, but obviously, permalinks to things I write aren't going to go to that site, so I want to make a real blog.

I used html and php to create that page - I don't know any css at all. Have basic mysql knowledge. Can I integrate something like wordpress (the one i've been looking at the most to use) into what i've already got, and keep the color scheme, and appearance basically as it is? I don't have to switch it all over to css, do i?

Wordpress is PHP powered, however from what I know about it, it's essentially CSS driven. However, given that CSS is basically HTML styling, it shouldn't be too onerous. However, I've never used WordPress, so I'm not the best person to ask.

Best bet is find someone using it and ask them, there are lots of blogs out there that specialise in helping people set up blogs.

PRetty sure you can copy that appearance though.
