How smart are you? I reckon my worthy friends list could take that test and bump the avarages up a bit, right? Good good.

Went to [livejournal.com profile] oldharrysgame recording last night after work, was good, weirdly, episodes 4 & 6 were recorded, not 3&4, cast availability or something (Gina's full report here. Day off today, have a job interview for a permanent job later, looks good on paper. Might write full report for last night on the community this afternoon/evening. Or I might just do something else, not sure.

only got 22/25, me. But then considering those were likely the questions on American geography and popular history, I don't feel too disappointed.

24/25

I'd be proud, except "What date does the 4th of July fall on in Russia?" broke my head.

Tee Hee.

And yeah, very America-centric questions.

Wasn't the America-centrism - that actually added challenge. It was the implication that most people got these questions wrong.

Think about the average person. The archetypal man on the Clapham omnibus. Picture him in your mind, and picture his mental capabilities. He's absolutely average. Think how STUPID he is; how unlikely he is to actually read the questions properly, handicapping himself before he even starts to answer. Think how little he will know about the world, when his ONLY reading matter is the Sun (or perhaps the Star). Normal people don't have books, and don't like to stray outside their comfort zone of knowledge.

Think how he would click random answers in an annoyed fashion because he would feel like the test was making fun of him personally, because he'd KNOW he was doing badly.

Then remember that if he's average, 50% of people are EVEN STUPIDER THAN HIM.

Try not to despair.

This, while very probably true, doesn't fit in with my worldview. I have a reality problem that way.
From: [identity profile] miss-s-b.livejournal.com
Reality is something I'm trying to ignore at the moment anyway.

Not managing it very well, but, you have to try.

Gah, got 24/25. Dunno which one I got wrong, but how should I know how far Seattle is from New York?

I've been seeing a lot of complaints from non-US-based people about the US-centricity of some of the questions.

However the US-centric questions are all just knowledge of geography and/or history. New York and Seattle are, after all, both major cities. Just as Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Ted Kennedy were major players in recent world history, not just US history.

How many Europeans would be able to tell you how far Bucarest is from London? (Or even where Bucarest is?)

No joke, there was a recent study, and 7% of respondents thought that Mikhail Gorbachev is President of Russia. SEVEN PERCENT. He hasn't been President for fourteen years.

I got one wrong, and I'm pretty sure it was affect/effect. I can never quite manage that one and usually end up using "impact" instead. :-p
