DDOS done with - Botnet with nasty links?

OK, it appears that the DDOS attack that was causing issues for many of us in posting has ceased (as of Wednesday). ljkrissy posted in news at times we were being hit with over 10 times our normal traffic load. Ouch. LJ has, I'm told by those that know, a remarkably robust server structure, but 10 times normal traffic is horrible. Some of the preventative measures involved censorship and it y appears to be linked to a rather nasty Russian extremist group ^[1]. Meh, reading the comment threads as I ate my noodles, found one entitlement arse with a few issues. It's likely going to happen again, DDOSes are nasty (update and re-run spyware protection if you haven't done it recently, just in case), but in the meantime, I can post again without worrying if it'll go through.

[1] -- the Russian language sector of LJ is very political. That's about the most you'll get from me about such things; I did a study on Russian extremist movenets as part of my degree, and, well, ouch. These guys aren't even that nasty compared to many.

Wah! Going to ballet with gorgeous women = much more fun than going to weddings and being mocked for being Northern.

Absolutely; but people wanting to show their stupidity for mocking due to place of birth then that's up to them.

Because of course that sort of thing never happens to, say, me when I'm up there and am by default a soft southerner ;-)

Yes, but that's affectionate ribbing, not serious disapproval. Not "That's the only thing wrong with Charlie, all his relatives are Northerners. They're so loud and none of them have any class." followed by much pointing at me and whispering behind hands.

Ah, he's married into one of those sort of families. Ah well, no accounting for taste.

There's one branch of my mothers family a bit like that, I've never understood them, especially given our background overall.

Russian extremists? Given the (fairly small) amount that I know about Russia's internal political situation, the 'dpni' thing sounds kind of creepy. Though I find it surprising that someone would be trying to censor what sounds like (by our standards) a 'far' right-wing group; I would have thought generally the FSB would be after liberal, democratic or left-wing groups.

Ah, the censorship was deliberate at LJs end, as whatever was attacking the site was trying to post lots of stuff with those letters in.

But yeah, I concur, Russian internal politics is scary and a bit nuts, but generally the real democrats are the ones those in power don't like.
