The name of the actor who will replace David Tennant in Doctor Who will be announced on Saturday. There now follows a poll.
[Poll #1324226]
As always, you need to be logged in to vote, Non-LJers almost certainly have some sort of OpenID they can use, LMK if you want me to find the link to the how to I wrote.

Someone else: Jack Davenport.

Objection to Paterson Joseph: same as to anyone else who fits this criterion - he's already been in it as someone else. I object to re-casting (not that my objection has stopped them to date, obviously), and that's the only reason I don't want him.

At the risk of being unfriended for heresy, I wasn't a big Colin fan anyway*. So that counter-argument doesn't sway anything for me. :)

* This may be partly because of his RL presence at school functions and my derived conclusion that he was, pretty much, A Total Cock IRL.

Oh hey, that's him. Neat.

Also, remember Romana's second regeneration? She'd been in it before... PRECEDENT.

Frankly Moff could then write any old tosh and I'd watch it...

I'm not sure if Devenport's got the 'Strange' to do the doctor. Whereas Patterson Joseph does.

Actors who have played more than one character in Doctor Who

John Abineri (4), Freema Agyeman, Anthony Ainley, Ronald Allen, Adjoa Andoh, Bernard Archard, Michael Atwell, John Atterbury, Roger Avon, John Bailey, Colin Baker, Lynda Baron, Terence Bayler, Richard Beale (4), Christopher Benjamin, John Bennet, Michael Bilton, June Bland, Helen Blatch, Edward Brayshaw, Roger Brierly, Nicholas Briggs (4), Eleanor Bron, Jeremy Bulloch, Brian Cant, Denis Carey, Silas Carson, Tony Caunter, Tom Chadbon, Alethea Charlton, Dennis Chinnery, Erik Chitty, Michael Cochrane, Graham Cole (4), Ian Collier, David Collings, Pauline Collins, Nicholas Courtney FFS you can't have anything against the Brig, surely?, Peter Craze, Bernard Cribbins (if you count the Cushing version), and I can't be arsed scrolling any further. Look for yourself.

If this criterion had ever been used in Doctor Who we would have run out of actors frigging YEARS ago.

I know, but I still don't think they'd have run out of actors if they had practised a smidgen less recasting. Plenty of decent actors have never (yet) appeared in Doctor Who.

Besides, recycling over 30+ years is a little different to recycling over 4 bloody series. (Fewer in the cases of some, Freema among them.) I can understand the average viewer not remembering that X was in it 8 years and 2 Doctors ago; a lot more people will recognise someone who was in it last season, say. Not that that has stopped RTD to date.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is my choice. I think he has a bit more presence than Paterson. If Moff gives it to Jimmy Nesbitt I'll have real issues, Jekyll or no. My dad, lord love him, thinks that Robson Green would be a good choice, think more Wire in the Blood than Soldier, Soldier...

While I went for Joseph, 'someone else' in 1, 3 (according to some rumours) and 4 could well be Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Though the most pleasing part of the poll is learning that I'm not alone in thinking Bill Nighy would be a terrible choice...

Sorry I'm late commenting on 11th Doc posts, been away.

Anyway someone forwarded a rumour today saying Matt S wasn't the first choice and Ejiofor was offered but turned it down.

I'm not sure whether this was true or fan wishful-thinking that got out of hand through the tabloid press feedback loop.

Certainly not sure PJ was anything other than wishful thinking.

But still great thing is that many people were quite excited about PJ, with the "you can't have a black doctor" crowd being a pleasingly insignificant minority.

I certainly remember him being mentioned before (around Netherwhere time) to louder and greater resitsence.

I've decided I really won't be 100% happy unless it's Stephen Mangan in a Jonathan Creek-style duffel coat. Thus I am doomed to (slight) disappointment.

In all seriousness, I reckon they've got someone that no one has even hinted about or suggested. I really really hope it's someone virtually unknown.

Also, I would like bells and whistles added to my "Jesus, no, not BILLIE PIPER" answer.

I wouldn't like it if they recycled a previous actor for either the next Doctor or his companion like they did with Freema Agyeman. It shows an apparent lack of acting talent out there which isn't at all true. Bill Nighy is in every British film ever made but because he only seems to be limited to film work it should be OK. As much as I like the idea of Patterson Joseph being the next Doctor a surprise would be good too. If he were still alive my favourite would have been Richard Harris. Bring back the old Doctors.

But it's what they do repeatedly. It may be a RusselTDavies-ism, and thus lost under the new Moffat Overlord, but as well as Freema, about half the cast of Torchwood held other roles in Dr Who.

However it's his thing to try someone in a random one off role, and then have them back as a major ongoing character.

Looking at that list, it's been previously done with the Brigadeer, and with Romana.

Wheres RTD has done it with Martha, Gwen & Toshiko, Martha's mother (was previously a Cat-Nun).

But she was playing a random one-off minor character, then later a more major, ongoing role.

In that instance, the same character, but I'd argue it's still an example of the same approach.

I'm half hoping it's someone nobody has even thought of, like Tennant (as far as I was concerned) was fairly unknown and rather a pleasant suprise.

I have worked out a way I'd be happy if the Marquis were to play the Doctor, even though he was on Satalite 5, and had something to do with Rose "almost dying" [again]. There is only one way I will accept it, if it's him. There must be a moment of "I've seen that face before... urgh!" and then NO MORE SHOULD BE SAID. Otherwise it's STILL all about Rose. *yawn*

Or its just not mentioned at all. I don't think the fact that Colin was in it before was ever mentioned either. In Romana's regeneration it was, but that whole scene is played for the comic value anyway.

Hmm, while this may be true, it seems to be in the current epoch's habit to try and "explain" why actors turn up again: Martha's 'cousin' at Torchwood 1, Gwen being asked if she came from an old Cardiff family etc. Although, I quite liked that last one ^_^

I think part of the erson for that is that there is so little to difference, visibly, between the two of them and the characters they played before, that it does seem quite weird. Presumably it's because they felt little reason to differenciate them when they were playing a small part, and they didn't want to make some big change that they'd have to put on when they played their bigger one.

My motherunit and brotherunit both said that casting Paterson Jospeh was a crazy idea; I quote:

"He's never been a black guy before, so regenerating into one doesn't make any sense whatsoever!" or something along those wacked out lines. They both think it has to be a white male again. I worry for my children if they'll have a grandmother and uncle that narrowminded.

And about him being in it before - Colin was in it before and became the Doctor, and Freema was in it before and became Martha. So it wouldn't be that hard for fans (especially the younger ones) to adjust. You want crazy? Some want John Simm even though he is established as the Master. Wha?!
