Arriving at the car park, I performed a quick Goth count. Forget ‘percentage of free school meals’ or the school’s behaviour policy, the best way to gauge behaviour is to do a Goth count. The number of moody teenagers dressed in black and wearing studded bracelets is in inverse proportion to the amount of bad behaviour in a school.

Though usually silent and aloof in class, Goths work reasonably hard, they have outside interests that extend beyond Lambrini and sportswear and, by their very disdain, they don’t disrupt.

OK, the condescension can get irritating but, overall, I like a healthy scattering of Goths in a school.

Via [livejournal.com profile] thalinoviel I discover the amusement that is Teacher Blogging! Blog Standard Comp is here and I especially liked Water Torture.

On the subject of Goths generally, clicked on a commenter at [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat's and found this post on a class presentation on Goth Subculture.

We question norms and discuss issues, rather than just accepting what we're told. Is this outright rebelliousness? No. It's intelligent examination of things that mainstream society doesn't choose to deal with ... At one point, one girl commented that the reason she was bothered was because she didn't WANT to think about the things that goth embraces...darkness, death, sex, alternative religion...she'd rather just ignore them. I told her that the difference between a goth person and a person who doesn't embrace the philosophy is that we can't just ignore it...it's something we, for whatever reason, have to face and deal with. "We're not the sort of people who can put on a smile and a pink dress and have everything just be ok."
Another attempt to define what it is. Not sure I'll ever see one I actually think sums it all up. Amorphous, indefinable, all in the eye of the beholder?

Meh. /introspective elitism...

Heh, at the centre of it all, goth's all just a bit of fun. Ironically.

Personally?

I just think it's a way to excuse the fact that if my clothes actually had colour, I'd clash horribly with myself.

I think it's an individual point of view. True a lot of individuals have vaguely the same mindset, i.e. acceptance of said individuality, looking at the darker parts of life etc.
But you'll never really get a true definition as everyone has their own opinion.

IMO the whole point of goth is that it is unique to each person; it is FAR more a method of self expression than other subcultures (Note: don't get angry punks, I didn't say all!) and there seems to be much more freedom for personal belief in the goth community. Goth is as a lifestyle unique as the person and I hope the rest of the community is intelligent and open enough to accept other ideas and concepts of goth, and the unique people that make it such a varied group. Plus you get to wear pretty dresses and lots of make up. Long live goth!!

Goth communities are just fun because they are the only place you can be arrogant and pretentious about how arrogant and pretentious everyone else is. Also wearing only black you avoid some fairly serious fashion mistakes and always know that your clothes match.
