OK, Saturday, as I said, I was supposed to meet [livejournal.com profile] draich_goch and others in Exeter. I was also supposed to go to his Sat evening so I could watch the new Robin Hood. Only, y'know, the whole not watching TV thing meant I completely forgot about it.

Tonight, I went to his (to sort out some stuff for our ACW campaign, we are nasty little moderators), and after we'd done watched the recording he'd made.

Given the general consensus of my friends list from Saturday, I wasn't expecting much from it. Y'know what? My low expectations? Far too high.

Ye gods that was awful

From hairstyles straight from the salon, women (peasant women) with make up that would look overdone today, overblown action sequences, silly plot holes, men running much faster than horses at a gallop, more plotholes, weird armour on the Sheriff's men, bloody awful acting, Keith Allen doing his "they're paying me to do this, in Hungary" routine, an utterly ludicrous sequence where a line of archers with bows notched don't even try to shoot until "our heroes" are far too close anyway...

Meh, that's the short version. Anachronism a go-go, overblown nastiness, befuddling rationale. Oh, wait, I said I'd stop listing faults.

It was, I'll admit, fun. And watching it while taking the piss probably made it better. And Marion does look good. But still, given the money they spent, I think this summation of the script is the best I've read. Ah well.

Also, does anyone else find that they have absolutely great ideas for posts when completely unable to write them up, like while driving? I had one earlier, in response to this post by [livejournal.com profile] rho and the post she links to by [livejournal.com profile] wearemany. Both posts are great, and worth a read, but the money quote (well, my favourite) from [livejournal.com profile] rho has to be:
geeks, in my experience, tend to be tolerant, not out of any sort of moral or ethical conviction, but because they just don't care. Worrying about someone's sexuality just gives you less time to be concerned over more important things like their OS choice or their collection of polyhedral dice.
I'll try and write up what I was going to write when I'm not already up too late...

Now that you have watched it I can at least record over it. hehehe. The "Saracen" knights/men-at-arms/archers were.......different. And don't forget the "flashing blade" bit with the swinging of the swords and the slashing and the cutting. Only there wasn't any slashing and cutting.

Still, at least we got the campaign stuff done.

I have such happy memories of Robin of Sherwood, at least before Jason Connery came and ruined it, that I woudn't want them sullied by this modern abberation. Cheers for the warning. Pity poor Keith Allen though. He was so good in Martin Chuzzlewit.

My mate Matt says the same thing - the stories are more involving in the later series. I just can't get past Connery. He's a personality and charisma vacuum. Richard O'Brien's fun as a baddie I suppose.
