Suspect this is the same kind of honest communication that brings you "on time" on the platform displays when it is five minutes past due and there is obviously another train blocking the platform.
The answer depends on whether you're a responsible company or merely one responsible for the quick and easy transportation of thousands of people at the lowest cost possible.
In this case, it wasn't the train company's fault, it appears to have been Network Rail--the train manager was fuming, he found out by phoning in after they'd diverted the train.
I was just about to comment that you can always pitch for a cab in circustances like these; then I saw the next entry. I got Virgin to pay for a cab to take me from Bristol to Nottingham once.
Via Birmingham, I think. It was supposed to be a direct train from Euston to Manchester with a few stops just outside Manc only, but Trent Valley was shut off so we went around the houses with a bunch of other trains as well :-(

Stupid gits. There should always be a name and phone number of the person responsible for things like this so that we can properly vent.
