Fantastic Films at the National Media Museum

I've mentioned the Fantastic Films Weekend a few times recently, but today the National Media Museum put the new website live so we have some details:

This year the line-up includes the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse double-bill, the ultimate Cushing/Lee pairing in Dracula, Daughters of Darkness, Eyes without a Face, Blood on Satan’s Claw and John Carpenter’s The Thing in 70mm with an exclusive video introduction from Carpenter himself. Our guests will be cult filmmakers Harry Kümel, Peter Duffell, Piers Haggard and Robert Fuest.

Now, I'm not a massive horror film fan (because most horror films don't involve space ships), but I can appreciate a good flick, and the normal selection they've had has been brilliant, last year included Soylent Green, 300 on the IMAX, a showing of Ghostwatch and Forbidden Planet. So that's some proper SF, some decent horror, some weird FX driven stuff and SPARTA!

It's a really cool venue in Bradford, just a few minutes walk from Bradford Interchange bus and rail station, incredibly easy to get to. Especially from our house, the 363 takes 20 minutes from the end of our street. So that's:

Admit it, you're interested. And you want to come. You can even throw in a visit to sunny Brighouse and see where I live and everything.

And, honestly? Bradford's actually quite a nice place as well. Honest. Or you could do what some of the British Horror Forum regulars are doing (including pmoodie?), and stay in the hotel down the road from us because it's dead cheap and really nice. And they probably won't bite. Unless you're into that sort of thing. And I know you lot, some of you are...

I love Braddy. I know it has it's faults and it's a bit run down and shoddy, but then so am I so maybe that's where the affinity comes from.

I just wish it didn't clash with the Mela every damn year...

Gah. The same weekend my in-laws are visiting. Bugger.

(Although the last time anyone I knew from the US visited, I *did* take them to Bradford - and they loved it, and have in fact since worked on a radio documentary with my former songwriting partner Tilt on the similarities between Bradford and Fresno, California...)

whats the name of and how much is the hotel? I usually stay at the Ivy Guesthouse when going there for film festivals, but they appear to have gotten greedy with their room tarrifs...-_-

You can always join us at the 24 hour bar in the Waterfront, and then scoot off to the guest house afterwards. As long as someone accompanies you, the streets of Brighouse are mean!

Agreed. Everytime I've visited Bradford for the animation festival someone either gets shot, stabbed or murdered. Last time I went it was that policewoman that made national news...not 100 yards from the Ivy Guesthouse. Shudder.

Yes, I and my lovely partner El will be staying at the Waterfront Lodge in Brighouse, along with an unspecified number of BHFers. There were originally going to be more, but a couple have had to cancel because of work comittments. :(

And contrary to common misconceptions, us horror fans are actually the nicest people you could meet! Our dark sides get a cathartic release from watching lots of scary films! It's the "normal" people you have to watch out for... ;D
