I like Twitter. It's nice, quick and effective, and allows for quick thoughts or short public discussions that can crossover with others. That there are MPs sometimes sat in the House of Commons listening to debates and reading Twitter means I can, if necessary, pass information on nice and easily. Not done it yet, but it might happen.

I also like sharing links and stuff on Twitter, and having my Twitter posts (but not replies) transfer to both my Facebook status and as daily digests. As I'd just stopped doing linkspams and can't be bothered to fix the code, I'm temporarily doing all my links through Twitter as well, it suits me.

I like reading others Twitter digests, ported through LoudTwitter, on my friends listReading Page. I personally dislike it when they're cut, as it stops me doing a quick scan and I'm not likely to open the cut text up as it takes too long. If I don't want to read, I can scroll past.

Given that I like having LoudTwitter posts on my friends page, I've added some code to my journal to make them look a lot better than the default. This is Good.

But I also know that some people, poor misunderstanding types that they are, dislike seeing Twitter posts, completely. Given that some people seem to insist on crossposting all their Tweets, including their halves of ongoing conversations that make little sense, I can understand this, but it's better to just get such people to turn off the option of importing replies, as [livejournal.com profile] redatt explains.

But, for those of you that really don't want to read Loudtwitter posts on their friends page, and for those of you that want to enhance the Loudtwitter posts that appear on theirs, I thought I'd share some code.

My enhancement code:

And some removal code if you really want it:

Note, I coded it in twenty seconds, it's a simple CSS trick, it only removes the list of tweets, not the whole post, and it was really easy.

To use either, all you need to do is go to CustomCSS on LJ or DW and copy/paste it in
http://www.livejournal.com/customize/options.bml?group=customcss
http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options.bml?group=customcss

For those of you that have got into the habit of cutting your tweet imports because some friends wanted it? If they don't want to see them, link them here. Because I'd much rather see them, and helping everyone make their tweets look pretty makes sense to me. Anyone that wants the colours changed to suit their background, feel free to comment.

Guess I ought to try to write something every so often here, right? Reports of my existence may or may not have been exaggerated...

So, yeah. Annual happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] foxfirefey, and indeed to my cousin Gary, ten years to the day older than me and in hospital with serious cancer (this isn't new news to me, but we share a birthday so I think about him a bit).

Meh mood,  ) but some cool stuff )I've been hacking my layout again, S2 is easier... )

Friends list reduction cut thingy )

Still, gotta finish writing this, ten minutes to midnight so the day is almost over, and cake beckons...

Those of you using the usericon replacement code I mentioned here may find this comment (and the follow on thread) by the always helpful [livejournal.com profile] burr86 of use:
Aha. Modify your code -- every time there's a "padding" statement, make it "padding: (whatever) !important"? Now that I dig into it, we added a little padding next to the lj user icon, and your CSS is conflicting with ours.
I've got ma Daleks back--I'm updating my previous post now.

OK then. Having fixed my template, I remembered that I promised aaages back to do a walkthrough on how I made it and how you can make your own—using just a Cascading Style Sheet, which is so easy even I can do it. This is especially true for [livejournal.com profile] nadriel who, despite having a BSc in Computer Science is still using the Piximix theme I set for him as a joke 6 months ago. So here we go...

The basics and the code )
That gives you my layout, exactly as I've got it, colour scheme and banner image and all. Which I'm sure you don't want, you don't want to copy me, you want to personalise, right? Besides, even I don't like my current header graphic anymore,s o you'll want to change that ASAP. So let's go through it...
The code explained... )

There. Easy, isn't it? Anyone can make their journal look pretty. Well, prettier and more personal, anyway. All it takes is a bit of patience and the ability to pick colours. No prizes for guessing why mine is black and grey, right?

Feedback welcome, even if you don't like it. And yes, I'm aware bits of the code could be cleaned up, I spent a chunk of the afternoon getting it this clean already...

Well, to be more specific, I did a lot of trial and error copy/pasting my CSS, and think the problem is the large amount of /* comment */ text there was in there. As anyone that codes CSS will know, commenting on your markup is dead useful when you come back to it cold after a few months. But by judicious removal of most of it, I've both got the appearance back the way I like it and made a few minor improvements (especially to the way comments display).

Not going to bother hacking in and sorting out the tagcloud now, might do eventually but, y'know, bigger things to worry about. Can't find anything in the LJ FAQ saying why they're now stripping out CSS with large comment texts, that's a really strange decision to make. Ah well.

Silly quiz: Smut novel character )Can't really argue with that one...

I can't find a press release on the Beeb site, and of course this may be general knowledge I've missed, but all I can really say is about bloody time.

In other news, I did a minor edit to my CSS for my LJ earlier, removing some code from it. It's now refusing to display it, the rendering engine says: /* Cleaned CSS: *//* suspect CSS: high bytes */. Which, y'know, is weird, given that it was working fine earlier and I took code out. Tried self hosting the style sheet, same error, different way of telling me, neither good or user friendly (because normal people wouldn't know to view source LJ, get a clue!). Support request to open after work methinks :-(

I love my LJ layout. I like the colour scheme, I like the friends page, I like the 3-column view, the tag cloud.

Unfortunately, it handles very long threaded conversations incredibly badly. On the one hand, comments=good, we like comments. On the other, a large chunk of text crammed into a comment an inch wide is just silly.

Gah! I can always append ?format=light, but that disappears after a comment is made, so you get the narrow column again. Ah well, back to a redesign of some sort I guess :-(

Maybe later. Much later. Maybe I'll just export everything earlier than planned. Oh, I dunno. My flat appointment for tonight got bumped to tomorrow, so I've got nowt to do, Mike's at a leaving do. Hmm, broadband. YouTube. I'll watch YouTube. And maybe some of [livejournal.com profile] ginasketch's stuff.

London lunch tomorrow?

Anyone want to meet up for lunch in town tomorrow? Or indeed Saturday?
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (LJ-Marvin)
Well, hacking around and coding stuff is interesting. I've nearly learnt how to do it now. I've given up on LJ figuring out what was wrong with my layout and just used the override hacks they've given me, it works, although the middle column isn't quite in the right place. [livejournal.com profile] matgb

I made me a banner/header background. I've got a curved edge version, but my FTP client has decided I don't have access to my own site. Probably a glitch their end. The Collegium logo underneath the names will go, that's there for the MySpace (if I ever go back and login again), I forgot to delete it. Anyway, to celebrate my new layout, a quiz...

[Poll #852514]

And yes, I am messing around with the poll options, I'd not seen drop down boxes before. In other news, I'm re-reading Hogfather, and I am so looking forward to seeing it. I'd forgotten how much of a part Albert has in it, and I can just hear David Jason's voice giving Death the hints, etc. Unfortunately, my sleep pattern is still all over the place after last week, and that's not been helped by idiot neighbours asking me to move the car at 8am two days in a row, but not actually sterting work until after I actually drove off to get to work after 10am. Because I really love being woken up an hour and a half before planned two days in a row when my insomnia is killing me anyway.

Still, watched Sin City and Serenity tonight when I came home early. Actually watched Serenity twice, I, um, didn't bother to stop it the second time and just dozed through it. [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween? Can you bring my Firefly box set down if you are coming down Friday?
matgb: (Webstuff)
This is my 501st post, apparently. That's to LJ, not on all the other places I've started writing since I signed up for this thing. [livejournal.com profile] nadriel? In the unlikely event that [livejournal.com profile] liberty_central actually works, or gets somewhere at all? It's your fault y'git, you got me writing again.

Unfortunately, I can't break my writers block. I need the inaugaral "real" article for [livejournal.com profile] voting_taktix, but it won't flow. "Tactical voting is a myth", on a site dedicated to tactical voting? Yay for contradictions.

Also, nicked from someone else's LJ (look, I click on the profiles of cute girls who put themselves in userpics, ok? Anyone here not do that?):

Why I'm unique )

Tomorrow? Exeter, if I get up, to play silly game's at Steve's with Peter Pig. If I wake up. Oh, I also need to clean and tidy the flat, as it'll be the last chance between now and when I get back from [livejournal.com profile] nadriel's. Two weeks holiday in one month? Yay! Must remember to buy tickets for those events.

Also, on the quiz thing? A few of the questions are US specific. Sorry, but knowing which Amendment does not isn't a History question, it's a Constitutional Theory and practice Q. I mean, I got that answer right anyway, but, y'know, I would've got a better score if the questions weren't aimed at one populace. Cos I is ded smart, see?

Layout woes

Actually, the Expressive layout and theming options are very cool. I like them. A lot. In fact, my journal, although lacking a header image and some background stuff, now looks very nice indeed.

Small problem though; it doesn't work properly in IE. [livejournal.com profile] burkesworks has confirmed that the profile column appears to overlap the main entry column, which it does for me as well when I check using it. As I haven't actually touched the column positioning myself, it means it's actually a problem their end, so I've opened a support request. In the meantime, my journal looks pretty good in Fx, OK in Safari, and both unreadable in parts and fugly in IE. Hopefully, we can deal with the unreadable bits, but the fugly bits? I'm using stuff from CSS3, which IE isn't implementing at all. I looks good my end.

Bah, who cares. The BBC is going to repeat Dangermouse having bought the rights. I mean, I can't watch it, but still, that's cool, it means a whole new generation of people encounter Penfold.

Oh, the signed Jasper Fforde book I mentioned I bought yesterday? It had a postcard custom made by him half way through, of one of his made up villages. Very very cool.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Marvin-Life)
As of one hour, ten minutes ago as I type this, I officially became 32 years old. Do I care? Not really. Do I have any special plans? Well, I've got the week off, so, well, I'm meeting Mum for lunch tomorrow, and going to visit Granny Wednesday, which'll be cool, haven't been to Slapton for ages.

Then home, to check messages, post this, catch up with some memes I've been storing up, then turn in.

Memes and quizzes

I did a mindmap. It's too wide to display properly for the 3-column layout, so here's the link. When I say "I did a mindmap", what I mean is I aske them for one and gave them my email address about 6 months ago, and got the reply last week. Meh, it's free, so de nada.

What Goth am I? )

West Wing Character )

New layout

Also? I switched to the new Expressive Vox theme layout. Huge advantage is that the html is very clean and everything has a nicely defined class, so I can style each element. A numpty like me has managed to personalise my journal fairly well. Nowhere near finished, but it works. Tag cloud, page summary, profile, all fairly good. I did go through and delete a huge pile of one-use only tags to make the cloud look almost respectable. Now all I need is to learn how to make banners look good. Or ask someone for one, want to use the same one for here, my MySpace and possibly the column at TaKtiX.

It isn't to be. So, publicity for the new film, random hoaxers or sinister conspiracy?

Trying to wade through the style authorship guides to figure out how I can fix the wandering righthand boxes; if anyone can find a quick fix form me without dumping the 3 column them I'd appreciate it. I may get around to writing up those reviews I promised at some pointas well. Ah well; took the morning off work exhausted; finished Lost in a Good Book which I recommend and then bimbled in to work.

Not sure I like the randompost thing; no annoying memes yet (fortunately), but the feed is stripping out the lj-cut text, so you get the whole thing even if they were good enough to cut it. So, having watched lots of people join up, I may dump it after less than a day's trial. Meh.
matgb: (Webstuff)
Well, I was bored, ran out of things to browse, read every news story that looked interesting, used my first ever Slashdot mod points, so decided to play around with my LJ settings.

Look: [livejournal.com profile] matgb

What I've done with my journal )

Can people say if they have problems with it and if so which browser they use? It's an error in an LJ approved layout, so I'll need to harass them to fix it, but it would be good to know; alternately, it might just be my crappy PC acting up.
