K, not that long ago, [livejournal.com profile] singanathema's Mum, Bridget, passed away. Cancer. I never met her, but [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween spoke very highly of her, ergo she counts as Good People.

In her memory, the pair of them are organising a series of fundraising events, the first, in Exeter, will be "a variety performance which will be on Saturday the 24th of June from 7pm until midnight in The Showman (formerly the Roadhouse)on Cowick street."

I'm currently open for suggestions as to what I'll be doing, running and hiding seems like a plan, but I probably won't get away with that.

More info on the community they've set up, [livejournal.com profile] memories_of_mum, it's all for:

Would be a good Exeter LJ meetup type thing, all for a good cause?

Today, I cooked myself a decent breakfast (which was prompted by me forgetting to turn off the damned alarm clock), did some stuff online, made some decent sandwiches (with healthy salad type fillings, quorn slices (and cheese, no point in sandiches without cheese) and drove to Exeter.

The drive took longer than expected. Traffic didn't move, at all, for half an hour at the bottom of Telegraph Hill. Someone had managed to flip their car (big time), didn't see what had happened as the clear up was finished but the tailback was huge.

At GameSoc, played a game of Attack! with [livejournal.com profile] mapp, [livejournal.com profile] dainul, Beef and Vaughan, who I hadn't met before. I love attack, but the steep learning curve for the mechanics means it takes too long to set up the first game, which meant we ran out of time. [livejournal.com profile] mapp won, but we finished early, and he was very vulnerable at the end of that turn. Still, enough players both capable of playing and interested means that when we do get around to setting up the big double board all day game there will be people interested.

After that, played Tongiaki with [livejournal.com profile] granjero, Laurence and others, then played the silly duck game with Duncan. It's a very silly duck game. I love it.

Got home, came online, had a connection time out problem with most of the sites I wanted to read, and have finally got them loaded.

Oh.
The 3rd Doctor

Which Doctor Who are you?
this quiz was made by Auntie Krizu(:>)

At least I'm not Baker again. May have to go visit parents next weekend, sister has now moved in with them as the bungalow she's bought hasn't been vacated yet, and Easter + Mum's birthday, about time I managed to be a 'son', I've been such an all round flake recently. Other people have birthdays due as well, busy weekend methinks.

Today, I had a good day. It started well, I had a nice doze, checked my email using the phone, and then, well, I started getting text messages. Many of them. Mostly from [livejournal.com profile] mapp, but also from [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu and [livejournal.com profile] freddiefraggles. I was, um, persuaded, to get out of bed and get to Exeter.

Decent meal for a change )

A game of Sitting Ducks )

Fantasy Flight's new version of Britannia )

Overall, very glad I dragged self out of flat to Exeter, board games are always a great way to spend an afternoon, and talked through with various people the plans for different bits of TaKtiX, which is good. Back to work tomorrow. Ought to turn in really.

K, I'm coming down with the bug every other bugger in the office has had, so I'm just finishing covering the welfare desk then going home. In the meantime, Sunday...

Got to GameSoc late, (most of the people that said they'd ring did, which meant I was delayed by answering the phone to people who were making sure I wouldn't be late- that and getting angry about an ID cards article I'd read while eating brunch) and met up with [livejournal.com profile] nearly_everyone, people were playing Tongiaki and Pirate's Cove, so I watched and then we played Scrabble. Well, 4 of us did, [livejournal.com profile] mapp insisted on scoring. Scrabbletastic... Short version? I win. Big time. ). Fun, but not a game I want to play regularly.
Fluxx: Bloody silly game. [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu wins be cheating (I think). Always fun, always silly.
Doom, the Board Game: Now, you know this is going to go wrong when the first question someone asks is "When is PVP enabled"? Doom? Doomed we were )
Fun, very Space Hulk like, worth another blast sometime but nothing to take seriously.
Domaine: Written (IIRC) by the same guy that made Settlers of Catan, with artwork by Franz Vohwinkel (who I've met), one of those games that looks complicated but really isn't.
Amun Re: Egyption pyramid building. The Nile floods... ) Can anyone remember who won?

So, 5 different games played in 8 hours. That's pretty good, very cool. Thx all for a pretty good day. Right, time to vacate the office, I actually finished work half an hour ago but, well, Simon's telling stories from his cruise work...

Did I mention I'm ill? It's man-flu for sure, but, well, I'm still ill.

Sunday, Vs and Exeter )

Work was OK today, the owner/company founder is visiting tomorrow, so the MD dropped a few hints that I really ought to tidy my desk. Um, he sort of had a point; paperwork that's been there since June? Oops.

Wargaming at Rob's, the usual Monday night... )

Overall, I'm in a good mood; not sure about Deitmar's visit tomorrow; he's the owner of FTi Touristik, the parent company of LAL group, which owns TLC. Except for the small point that his first company was TLC, everything else he built on top. Be good to meet him I guess.

Anyway; this post brought to you by the LJ email gateway, not that I'm checking out the new functions or anything...

Tee hee :-D

Bunker was fun last night; I just got up. Odds of driving to Exeter very slim so I'll see people whenever.
In the meantime, I'm off to trawl the net and annoy some "true fans" of H2G2 who are still whinging about the changes. I might just quote Adams at them on the subject.

Volts was very cool last night, really glad I went. Thx to Pink for talking me into going, Mark for being fun and everyone else for generally being around.

Now, explain this in the same article:
"Student journalism is often a heady mix of passion and ignorance. A criticism labelled at student ‘hacks’ is a failure to check and clarify a story"

As a follow on to this:
"Two years ago, Exeposé printed a mock interview that claimed that RocSoc members dressed in black because they were abused as children. Quite understandably, many people were very upset, which led to a stand-off in the M&D room during an editorial election. RocSoc hired a lawyer to proceed with a libel action,"

Hmm. You'd have thought that, given there are plenty of people still around on campus who do remember the full details, they could at least have, well, checked their own records?

RocSoc didn't hire a lawyer; as a Guild Constiuent Organisation, it would be unable to sue another part of the Guild anyway. Court case of Exeter guild of Students versus Exeter guild of students anyone?

I, as honorary President, "consulted legal advise". Well, that was what we said publicly. I bought a friend (a lawyer) a drink and asked his opinion. Fucking stupid student media types. We decided not to sue for libel because, despite it being justified, the petty vindictiveness of one idiotic editor and her stooge is not enough to damage an organisation we broadly supported.

Ah well. So, should we let the myth perpetuate, or point out the facts to the relevent editors and/or guild types?

Bunker?

So, I've heard it's open, closed, closing, or completely still open.

I was planning on driving up, but if it's not on that would be pointless.

From what I heard, there should be no problems as only the upstairs flat was raided, not the pub or club, and the licensees are not implicated in anything. But that's just another of the runours.

Does anyone know anything concrete one way or the other? Staff are apparently booked to be working.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Default)
Well, slept most of the day (again, really have to stop sleeping in on Saturdays, it messes my bodyclock something chronic even though I mostly am exhausted). So went to OtherCon late, played a bit, then decided to go to the Bunker. Completely unplanned, got there about half 10.

Talked Dot and Beadle (although he tells me that's not how is name is spelt) into going as well, both enjoyed it.

It was actually a pretty good night;Anne-Marie jumped me as I got to the bar, fortunately Chris pulled her off; good to see they're still happy together (especially good to just see her happy). Felt old again, but gotta get over that; just because her father's a pretty good friend...

Finally met (Lyrical) Nikki from RocSoc; she's even prettier in reality, boyfriend :-( We bitched about how crap most of the committee are; I think she might make a good President, hope she runs. Also introduced her to Dot, who also wants to sort things out. So some progress.

Emma and Matty were down from London as well, so Tara, Louise et al were out in force; always good to see the mad bunch. In fact, I saw more people there I liked than people I didn't know, which is unusual for that place. Will is growing a mohican, wonder how silly it'll look.

Am glad Alice rang me to find out where I was, and also very glad to make the (late) decision to go out afterwards; Dot is fun, and Beadle seems a decent bloke as well. Overall, me in a good mood. Now all I need to do is get some sleep and wake up on time tomorrow...

Barry/Rox; am in Exeter on campus tomorrow from 12, no idea if oyu're doing much, but might get time to do at least come say hello; unlikely but I'll text at some point either way.

Godsdamn it! I decidd to update because I'd got a cool idea, but went to a few other tabs first. Now I'm back here and, um, it's gone. Ah well, just blither about the weekend I guess.

Went to the Bunker Saturday night, apparently got there about ten minutes after [livejournal.com profile] mapp left. Still, [livejournal.com profile] blacktone was there and [livejournal.com profile] nadriel was down, so that meant there was a human to talk to and Mike to take the piss out of (lots, sorry Mike, but, well, open goals and all)...

Chris and Anne-Marie were there, which kinda segues me into my next bit. Y'see, I first met Chris when he was a customer in the shop I worked at. I'd left school, dropped out of college, and was working full time. He was 11. Anne-Marie, I met independently. I worked for her dad. Again, the time I met her, she was 11. Now, they're both functioning adults, and a pretty happy couple. Gods I feel old, of the 5 people in the nightclub I actually like talking to, two of them I've known, as an adult, since they were kids.

That, and the club was full of kiddies and teenygoths. Seems to be getting worse. That's not just me getting old. So few people there that were worth speaking to. I had to check probable age before admiring the women; half, on a proper look, were cute kids, not women yet, certainly too young for me. Gah! What the fuck happend to the Bunker being the hangout of people into their 20s? That's what it was like when I first moved to Exeter. Where are the students? Oy, Wordsworth, Franglen! What's happened to you lot bringing people down for me to talk to? It's getting to the point that I may stop going unless people tell me they'll be there. Ah well.

Watching Mike was fun. Mike? Next time we talk, a few more notes on technique needed methinks. That was one pretty impressive crash and burn. Still, a worthy effort...

Night all, job to go to tomorrow (not that I'll sleep tonight)...

This is not my first post. This is just redated so it's not at the top of my journal all the time.

I'm Mat. This is my personal journal, the fun stuff. I also write in a few other places, including Not Little England (on UK politics) and TaKtiX (about gaming).

For more about me, your best bet is to read the bio and Userinfo. This post is mostly here so I can find all the tags I use easily, it may get more useful stuff in the future. It's not a 'Friends Only' Journal, but I do filter some stuff. Oh, if you're using Internet Explorer... ) go here and get help.
