TaKtiX - Reloaded

matgb: (Gaming)
It's [livejournal.com profile] granjero's fault. He asked me if I'd got anywhere with TaKtiX. I hadn't, I've been meaning to figure out the coding issues for ages, but haven't. Stuff the coding issues. It's live.

It's already got 6 new signed up columnists. Stuff about TaKtiX, my gamer blogging site ) That's without putting any effort in. Also, more page views in 6 hours than I get in 2 days at the political blog. With almost no content. But everyone is very keen, and let's face it, the interface is incredibly easy. The things I do when I'm ill.

I was supposed to be writing an article on the Human Rights Act. Or the Constitution. Or the Legislateive and Regulatory (abolish Parliament) bill.

[livejournal.com profile] theweaselking? Would you be interested in writing a bit of Doomtown content?

Bibliophiles

[livejournal.com profile] nhw writes book reviews, amongst other things. He's also got a vote in the Hugo awards (Swainston for the Campbell Nick, you know it, the world knows it). I don't recall now which one of us friended the other first, I've been aquiring 'politics' LJ a lot last few months. So. Why do we care?

This is an interesting (and negative) review of John Scalzi's Old Man's War which is nominated. I read it soon after it was posted. Thing is, Mr Scalzi is also [livejournal.com profile] scalzi. He wrote a rather long, and very civil, rebuttal on a number of points of the review in the comments, and also on his blog here. Based on Nick's review, I'd have possibly actually picked the book up, because the premise intrigued me. Now I definately want to read it, because, well, that sort of debate between reviewer, author, publisher (see comments on Scalzi's blog entry) and assorted fans is simply very very cool.

Constructive, involving, civil and useful. Nick's written a follow up here. Spoiler warnings throughout, but spoilers never really bother me.

Now, if we can get politicians to properly engage in such a manner, then democracy still has hope. Yup, Mat the hopeless idealist strikes again. I love the Internet.

Addenda: [livejournal.com profile] jantshira? Swainston is up for the John W. Campbell 'best newcomer' award. Just in case you didn't know. Also, do you still have either/both of Year of our War/No Present like Time? Only my father managed to donate a pile of books to charity, including some of the ones I'd loaned him. Yup, that's right, my father gave books away without first asking me if I wanted them. He didn't realise he had any of my books. This included my copy of Jennifer Government and 2 (unknown) others. Not a happy boy when I found out.

The world's flags given letter grades - genius. Incredibly funny and so so true.

Also, BritBlog Roundup - once more, with added [livejournal.com profile] mapp goodness; wasn't going to, but the Phishing thing just needed a bit of promotion; any news on that yet Mark? From there, I find [livejournal.com profile] rhodri, who wrote one of the more amusing articles in the Indy recently, and that post gives a more lighthearted breakdown of the picture. Some of the comments on that thread are surreal, but this one (the nominated one) is even better. Taking the piss out of Innocent has to be done, even if we do love their overpriced products — I sometimes do copyrighting for work, and the question thing is deliberate; "do you?" is more effective at atention grabbing than "do this", although I insist on it being a more suggestion thing: "Spare room? Host students for..." (I forget the rest).

Have I mentioned I hate being ill? Yesterday, when I woke up I felt a little groggy, by the time I'd done the ablutions I knew I was coming down with summat. Nothing serious, just a head cold, but I fell all gummed up and Lemsip isn't helping :-(

Ah well. Oh; LJ client users — do any of them allow for a better editing of filter groups option than the web interface? It's a pain figuring out that interface and getting it right, want to sort my view filters and my post filters out to be a little more sane...
matgb: (Webstuff)
Oh dear...
Which Hoff are you? ?!? )
Done mostly because people that read [livejournal.com profile] tyrell may find it amusing. Yes, of course I rigged the result.

On to more sensible stuff. Redid the Political Compass today, it had been awhile. I've moved slightly to the centre economically, but further from the centre socially. I think the latter is me hardening my views through the debate I'm having online. The former is I suspect because the questions had a few more "market" questions and less "safety net" and "ownership" questions; market socialism messes up these tests, I had the same reaction to the OK Cupid thing as well. Anyway...

Your political compass

Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.26

Why do we care? Well I did it early this afternoon. Later this afternoon, I saw the latest release for [livejournal.com profile] blogthings. Now, do the Compass, then do the blogthing. Compass has been around fot years, do we see a rip-off? Yup, yes we do. Actionable? Not my problem, I merely observe.
Your Political Profile:
Overall: 30% Conservative, 70% Liberal
Social Issues: 0% Conservative, 100% Liberal
Personal Responsibility: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal
Fiscal Issues: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal
Ethics: 0% Conservative, 100% Liberal
Defense and Crime: 50% Conservative, 50% Liberal

Coding issues on these tests )

[livejournal.com profile] mapp and others may be interested in The Project, I found a link to it on another blog and clicked it because of the old little trick.

Also, I'm experimenting with del.ici.us as a way of putting a linklog on the blog, and given it has an RSS feed...

[livejournal.com profile] matgb_links_fd. It'll mostly be cool blog articles I don't specifically want to comment on fully.

I'm feeling grotty and horrible, have a minor cold that's just making me feel annoying; not helped by downstairs neighbour keeping her window open and playing very loud music. She has a voice like a foghorn, sings along out of time, and has no sign of any self control. Two of the songs she plays regularly are dance/pop covers of Poison and a GnR song. Who knew?

Arriving at the car park, I performed a quick Goth count. Forget ‘percentage of free school meals’ or the school’s behaviour policy, the best way to gauge behaviour is to do a Goth count. The number of moody teenagers dressed in black and wearing studded bracelets is in inverse proportion to the amount of bad behaviour in a school.

Though usually silent and aloof in class, Goths work reasonably hard, they have outside interests that extend beyond Lambrini and sportswear and, by their very disdain, they don’t disrupt.

OK, the condescension can get irritating but, overall, I like a healthy scattering of Goths in a school.

Via [livejournal.com profile] thalinoviel I discover the amusement that is Teacher Blogging! Blog Standard Comp is here and I especially liked Water Torture.

On the subject of Goths generally, clicked on a commenter at [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat's and found this post on a class presentation on Goth Subculture.

No. It's intelligent examination of things that mainstream society doesn't choose to deal with ... Another attempt to define what it is. Not sure I'll ever see one I actually think sums it all up. Amorphous, indefinable, all in the eye of the beholder?

Best of British

I've mentioned it before, but every week, [livejournal.com profile] timworstall does a round up linking tot he best blog items he gets nominations for written in or by a Brit. This week it's here. Why do we care? Because [livejournal.com profile] mapp is on it this week.

Oh, I just got up. I haven't had any coffee yet. I'm unlikely to be going to GeekSoc. I will probably instead start work on my new space ships.

Have fixed entry in my previous post, [livejournal.com profile] sms_to_lj ate the extra text, must remember no long text messages for future posts.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (grrr-argh)
Hmm...
New blogcode meme )

Bits of it are vaguely accurate, but some of it is 100% off. No idea how the methodology is supposed to work either, what animals I like determines how I view relationships? Anyone either a) explain or b) get a result that makes sense?
matgb: (Gaming)
OK, as part of my "messing around with TaKtiX to see what works" project, I set up a blog for GW's Warhammer, on the grounds that a) I don't work for them anymore b) I know a lot of players, some of whom are pretty good writers and c) it should be a semi-popular subject.

So, we have a new feed account for it, [livejournal.com profile] warhammer_tx_fd. However, I recommend everyone goes to read this review, Tau Empire Codex - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly by [livejournal.com profile] mapp, simply because it's great. This has nothing to do with me liking Tau a lot. Mark's a cheesy git when it comes to winning though, I was convinced he was doomed at first, but Pink had no anti-tank on Sunday. Bwah ha!

Thanks Mark, pretty much exactly the sort of thing we need. In case you're wondering though, because blogger auto parses linebreaks (I can turn that off but don't want to), it means you're better off doing <h3>this</h3>with header tags, looks ugly when coding but removes some of the whitespace. I could do something witht he CSS, but that means, um, learning how...

I also like the way the template looks on that page, likely use that basic layout with a better colour scheme for the whole site once I've got it set up, yay!

Putting that up purely so that Google starts indexing it. Feed display script is quite nifty though.

Mat's going off on one again ) Recent discussions, ... )about the "snobby" attitude of some bloggers regarding Livejournal and similar, personal-style blogging sites got me thinking. ... )

Despite my interest in political blogs, the majority of blogspot, wordpress.com, typepad and similar blogs are personal blogs, in a very similar vein to your avarage livejournal. Examples ) So, I have an idea. ... )

Which brings me to this weeks Britblog roundup. I try to nominate something good every week, and have on occasions nominated LJ posts ... ) Tim takes nomination by email (britblog AT gmail DOT com) and is looking for anything that's well written and interesting, regardless of topic...  ) That includes posts made on LiveJournal or even (shudder) MySpace. Most of us read non-real-life-friends journals, right? If someone, anyone, makes a public post that's interesting, amusing and well written, nominate it.

It won't, by itself, dispell the anti-LJ snobbery amongst "real" bloggers, but it may help. Besides which, it's fun. Tim's book 2005 Blogged may get a follow up for 2006. Wouldn't it be cool to see something you nominated get into print?

Congrats to [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu for getting quoted and all. Can't find it online, but page 2, quote from his article and a link. "Citizen journalism" they call it. Yay!

A comment on this Samizdata.net post amused:
I just finished a meeting with a company regarding the filiming of a TV advert for their web-based job search company. It was suggested that they explore the possibility of using a weblog to expand their web reach, against which the in-house webdesigner launched a somewhat excessive tirade along the lines of. "nobody except dysfunctional geeks and pro-Bush gun nuts reads those sort of things" and then asked how many of us actually had a blog.

Everyone (about 9 of us) except him raised a hand ...
Quick handcount now puts me on 5 (sort of) with a lot more on the way very soon, most to be collaborative.

Met with my MP Wednesday. He's thinking of setting one up, can I help? Hmm...

Mat thinks back to his 'plan for the year'. Yup, as I was going to work on you to start one, helping you do so before I've even started the effort seems like a good plan...

Exeter Wargames show tomorrow (well, today), will be selling some old gaming stuff on the bring and buy; had no idea Minas Tirith was worth that much, probably eBay that one if no one picks it up. No plans afternoon/early evening yet, going to a party later evening.

OK, last Tuesday, I was tired, decided to take an early night. Unusually, I took a shower (I'm a morning shower person, usually, although I shouldn't be, they help me sleep). Y'know how it is in the shower when sometimes you get a 'moment of clarity' and everything comes together? I had one of those. I could see the 'perfect blog post' in my head. It was the right time, the right reason and the news of the week wasn't cheering me up. I came out of the shower, turned the PC on, and typed the whole thing up, wrapped only in a towel. It, um, captured the mood.

When we started counting numbers for the site, 100+ was a bloody good day. Then we got a bit more established, 150 was good, 100 was avarage. Recently, 150 became avarage. Until last Wednesday...
Viewer numbers chart )Look at that spike. It's stayed up there, today, we've got even more before the normal busy time even starts. I got used to [livejournal.com profile] nosemonkey linking every so often. [livejournal.com profile] chickenyog had done so as an aside. This weekend, I've been their link of the day. Today, we're top link on [livejournal.com profile] bloggerheads. That's a whole lotta readers; including more than a few MPs.

What have I let myself in for? I appear to be in the centre of a blogswarm and the beginnings of two new political movements, one of which should have long-term legs. It's just l'il ol' me, I was just writing up an idea I had while dripping wet... )

Um, [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu? We've got everyone's attention; my MP has emailed asking me to help him on his website and offered research and info assistance. Um; I have no idea what to do next, apart from go with the flow.

Anyway, I have a post to make, momentum to maintain, and a game to go to. Holy...
matgb: (Life)
Went to the Dentists today. For those that don't know me that well, that's a pretty momentous event; Iwrote teh full version as to why up here on [livejournal.com profile] devils_kitchen; as is usual for a post on the kitchen, swearing and insults are de rigeuer. Short version, haven't seen a dentist properly in five years, last time I had any treatment, the butcher messed it up, I had a very painful extraction and it scared me off.

My parents signed up with a new NHS dentist, and signed me up at the same time. So, I went. And am still alive. Not sure I can afford to pay for the 7 fillings I need, but at least I know I need them. Actually, on the money front, if any Amazon buyers feel helpful, can you go there via a link from the blog when you plan to buy stuff? Could do with the cash. Cost you nowt but a few more clicks, and we get 10%. Yay!

On the way home, it was raining, so my plan of a wonder down the seafront with the camera turned into a walk back to the flat. Went into the local store, and couldn't resist the temptation to buy a bottle of whiskey. Small one mind, not getting carried away. So, I've had a nice relaxing day off recovering from the dentists and slowly getting happy drinking whiskey.

Today has also been the second busiest on the blog ever; Wednesday was the third. The busiest was when someone linked to the stupid blonde joke via a Libertines forum (yes, I felt dirty). Finally made the breakthrough, might even actually get somewhere with the Liberty Central project.
matgb: (Webstuff)
Andreas Katsulas died on Monday. Having recently watched the first four seasons again (thanks to DVD loans from [livejournal.com profile] nadriel and [livejournal.com profile] paulatpingu), this depresses me, he truly made that series, and was obviously a damn fine actor. I think I shall watch an episode again tonight before sleeping, in his honour.

Also, and this scares me, they're remaking Monkey. This seems, wrong, to me. Monkey is Monkey, next up they'll be doing an English language version, or getting the dubbing to actually make sense.

Ah well. Both stories on Murky, really must see if it's syndicated already, impressive reach that site.

Oh yeah, I don't think I mentioned it here. Shiny Thing. When I was talking about StoryCode a few weeks back, it was because I was alpha testing BlogCode, which is very cool. Especially as it no longer thinks my best match is Harry's Place.

Serenity redux

Meh, I know, more memes. But the picutre of Zoe was pretty, I thought I'd try find Inara. Didn't work (again)...
Your results, you are:
Malcolm Reynolds (Captain)What Firefly character...  )
What do you mean, who's Mal? What's Firefly? Serenity? What kind of Friend are you? In fact, where have you been last two years? Not on the internet much, obviously... ;-)

Second best day yet on the weblog, my coalition post on getting New Labour out is proving rather popular. 47% firefox, naturally. I have an edumacated readership.

Meestor [livejournal.com profile] mapp? Bondwoman thinks St Andrew needs to be more prominent, and the Dragon a bit stronger; maybe draw the design of the crosses out a bit, keep the dragon the same? Can drop the Great Britain bit of the title as well, makes the text requirement lower. 'tis a great design still, but improvements are good, right?

From [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking:
Mike Hoye provides Ways To Make PDFs Not Suck for everyday use and viewing.

The short version:

Get Firefox.
Get the PDF-Download extension for Firefox, allowing you to choose to open PDFs in the browser, convert to HTML, or download to your PC, on the fly.
Get Foxit Reader, which is just like Adobe Reader but teeny and not bloated and fast.
No more clicking badly labelled links and having my PC chug for half an hour for me. Oh, also a metaquote:
Man: If you don't interfere with human affairs, what do you do with all your time?
God: Your Mama...heh heh heh...seriously though, I told that joke to this dude in Nazareth this one time and he so totally believed me.
Today, I have mostly been sleeping. And browsing. And shouting at Blogger for being crap. And shouting at my blog template for not working right. Oh, and destroying the Mongols utterly in CivII. And reading BritBlog roundup #51, which is always a great way to kill a Sunday.

Oh yeah, I went to the shop earlier, I was out of margerine and salad cream. That meant no toast and no other meals. That!=good. Work tomorrow, best behaviour, the company owner visits Tuesday.

CSS help?

2006-Jan-26, Thursday 22:01
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (LJ-Marvin)
OK, I've got to the point that I can read .css, but writing it? Completely beyond me.

So, what I want, is to sort http://not-little-england.blogspot.com/ so that the search box is on the right of the logo, the logo left justified and no longer centered. It's such an easy job, but I can't get it to work properly. What very basic principle am I missing?

Oh yeah; what's the html tag to force a display of unformatted text and/or code? Playing around with the blogger template is teaching me a fair amount, but I just don't 'get' code in the way the code monkeys I know do...
