Righty-Ho. [livejournal.com profile] synth_culture was fun last night, met up with [livejournal.com profile] nearly_everyone in the Doric Arches, then went on the the Egg to meet up with everyone else. Was good. Am still recovering from the hugely long bus journey home, in which the TFL timetables with set times made no sense at all ever. Still, was good to use my bus-fu and get us back via circuitous routes successfully...

Bah, you don't want to hear about my boring life, you want links! Yay links! Not many of them, because, y'know, not spending much time online *looks at SB* yes, well, *ahem*

A very cool flash based clock with pretty coloured spirals (via). ETA: Paul in the comments also points out there's downloadable screensaver as well. While I'm currently sticking to my Life on Mars clock, timekeeping screensavers rule.

Also, for those of you that regularly post IM conversations onto your LJ, this nice little IM LJ-ifier would make reading the darn conversations actually, y'know, do-able...

Oh yeah, last nights Now Show is now available to download (MP3) and being the BBC they even have it as a podcast as well. Go, listen, hear me laugh in the audience. OK, I'm one of many may, but, y'know...
matgb: (Cool)
Via [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda

How cool is that? ETA [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking had also earlier posted it, and has a link to the 45Mb WMV file on SadKermit.Com. A site I may explore further when I've time...

Also? Sir Tim interviewed on World Service Business Daily (starts about twoo minutes into the Thursday show, no idea how they're web archive sytem works but it's here currently).

Had a good evening in the pub with [livejournal.com profile] nadriel chatting about random stuff. Have decided that The Cavern is a better pub than The Tavern, if only because the jukebox is better. Someone was paying to listen to lots of Meatloaf, but given I've lost my copy of Bat Out of Hell (I think my sister has it, no real matter), that's not actually as bad as it sounds...

G'night all.
matgb: (Gaming)
Oh Michael? Look what I found:
Elf Team Yup, it's my Elf team. The first miniatures I ever bought, and amongst the first I ever painted. Scarily, of the figures I own, they're also the best painted unit, even though I last redid them when I was 18, way before I'd spent 10 years working for the company painting figures every day. My Cawdor gang for Necromunda is quite good, but these just rule.

Anyway, the point of all this? Well, after last weeks debacle, I have gone through all the gaming crap piled on the storage shelf and dug out the team I know I can win with. So, firstly, a rematch my friend. When?

Secondly? [livejournal.com profile] londonbloodbowl. Only just set it up, no posts, or rules, or anything. If Mike and I are going to be playing regularly, might as well organise something, right? I've sent invites to those who expressed an interest, but anyone else, feel free to join and we'll see what we can arrange.

Imperial War Museum hides its exhibits, but I might want to go back for another look around soon; any takers?

Methinks the didn't think this advert through (although I wouldn't mind meeting the girl pictured).

The 10 London Travel Commandments, a FridayCities project, brought to us by the same people that do the Friday Thing email.  I'm here, but I'm not sure I get the point, I guess got to get some friends on there.  Londoners on my friends list might want to give it a go? Invite code: jcccwy6ru1bq (don't follow the link from the commandments site, go directly there, type my code in, it gives me some bonus features I haven't figured out yet...).

Stardust trailer, (via) not sure on this one, TBH, bought the book in a sale awhileback, have held off reading as suspect movie may be good, but not the book, so more likely to enjoy the book after the movie...

DOS x86 emulator entirely in java, runs in your browser window (or apparently on your mobile phone).  Am killing that window now, have things to do today. Instructions / via.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] flemco speculates on a possible 300 sequel. It's Jay, do you need the NSFW warning?

Gotta go, [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween's birthday thing - which is why I didn't do Betty Ford last night for those wondering, got weekends mixed up...

Spent the afternoon unpacking the boxes still in the car and sorting theroom out; I have completely filled all my bookshelves in the new place. This would be fine, except I've still two boxes worth of books to unpack. Oops. Still, nice to have access to all the reference books if I want them. Unlikely, but you never know.

Got a text from [livejournal.com profile] d_notice_fd reminding me we'd arranged to meet up, so went to the Raynes Park Tavern which it transpirse is our mutual loacl, and dragged [livejournal.com profile] nadriel out as well. It's actually not a bad pub, considering it has a massive wide screen TV playing football. You can avoid that bit, the menu looked ok, and dirt cheap, and it is 5 minutes walk from my door. Probably worth a pub lunch or five at some point. Anyway...

Remember the Mass Lone Protest I did in January? Well, via both [livejournal.com profile] d_notice_fd in the pub and [livejournal.com profile] markthomasinfo I'm reminded that while I missed it last month, I can make it this month, so...

K, supposedly the advantage of broadband was I would post more between job hunting. Alternately, I can read more and explore YouTube. What do you think I've been doing?

Anyway; Saturday night, Slimelight, fun, and very much the Bunker only larger, grottier and without the ageing bikers (but with many ageing goths). I liked, but not enough to go regularly. Lost track of [livejournal.com profile] matryx and young lady nearer the end, couldn't find them to say I was off, then had fun negotiating the night busses. Will need to figure out how they work.

Sunday I did the whopping thing (huge 24 hour Tescos within fair walking distance, or I can, y'know, drive, car has to be good for something now and then, right? I know, I'll stop once Im settled in, might think about selling it). Then went oop north to meet [livejournal.com profile] jantshira for a chat. She'd started, read and finished the book I leant her Thursday; oh to be able to read that quickly.

Today? Mostly more unpacking, exploring the kitchen and then the internet, but off out now, to meet up with Chris of [livejournal.com profile] devils_kitchen fame, given we've been taking the piss out of each other and arguing for the last 18 months online and have both moved up here, makes a bit of sense. Expect a few fireworks in the High Street Ken area in about an hour...

I have, y'know, articles, and reviews, and cool links all stored up in my head, but I'm having fun, so you'll have to put up with me talking about my life more often. It's nice having one methinks...
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Hungry)
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Moving to London, stuff with friends, and pirates )
Anyway; I got to ?skip=200 on my main friends view, let alone blogs and weasels, so I gave up, so if anything major has happened in your life recently, or you've died, or something, LMK?

I'll put up a new contact details for LJ-friends tomorrow when I've figured out the post code, but the public bit is Raynes Park, near Wimbledon, SW20

I am a London resident, complete with house keys and off-street parking. Off street parking, broadband and a room that isn't as small as I thought, for £300 a month? Bargain!

Now, naturally, I have to go investigate the kitchen facilities, I'm a little peckish. Then, the plan is, investigate this thing known as Slimelight. I've never been.

Right, a little swamped. Meeting [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween and [livejournal.com profile] freedrinkdave in about 2 hours for our planned ages ago wander around Camden, then off to Covent Garden to meet [livejournal.com profile] jantshira. This is good. Then, get back here, drive back to Torbay. Pack car full of stuff, sleep.

Tomorrow: finish packing car full of stuff, drive back up. [livejournal.com profile] matryx? There's no way I'll make lunch tomorrow, timing messed up, next week, right? Still, will see you in the evening.

Friday evening: [livejournal.com profile] dudeulike's band Pyrites are playing at the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham, so we're already promised to go there. Then back to Mike's for my last night on his sofa. Saturday: go to new place, meet landlady, collect keys, move in.

New place has wireless broadband included in the rental price, no idea how good that'll be, but hopefully I'll be online quickly. If not I'll simply walk to Mike's regularly. In the meantime, some linkspam before I go...

  • [livejournal.com profile] rhythmaning has another awesome photo set, this time of London. As in previous sets, it's the lighting that really sets them off well.

  • An article in the Huffington Post about how being vegetarian is the best way to save the world. A little hyperbolic perhaps, and the astroturfing comments are pure comedy gold, but the basic principle is sound, and it is one of my reasons for not eating meat (I've never been the "don't harm the cute fluffy bunnies" type of vegie, as previous links may attest to).

  • In addition, [livejournal.com profile] jonhodgson. Everyone has an LJ it seems. This is the artist who was at the Mancon Warlord tournaments, website is jonhodgson.net. [livejournal.com profile] granjero, was one of your prizes one of his prints? I don't recall if you did your usual clean sweep at ManCon. And I'm not sure if [livejournal.com profile] shakalooloo went to either, Laurence? I know you went to both Midlanders as at some point we need to settle the hotel bills, but I don't recall ManCon.

  • Last up, still not written my rant about with Ruth Kelly is shit and should resign, but [livejournal.com profile] frightened is covering the aspects [livejournal.com profile] tyrell and [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat haven't already. But, this link is really for todays [livejournal.com profile] jesus_and_mo, Blackmailing Asshats.

Right, gotta rush, may or may not be online between now and Sunday, so comment'sll come from Opera Mini if at all ;-)
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Shiny)
Right, last night, I went to see a place advertised in the cheap section of the Ham&High property guide.  Flatshare, sounded about what I'm looking for.  Was right next to a complete self contained flat for less than £300pcm in the same postcode district as this place, so the prices looked right.

Met the (slightly batty) lady as she walked back from the shops, helped her in with her shopping, and just looked at the main room.  It was gorgeous.  So I turned and said: Um, the price in the paper, £300.  That's not per month is it, it's per week.  She looked at me as if this was blitheringly obvious.  It never occured to me to check, it was in the cheap section, and I don't know the areas well enough. Still, nice cup of tea, long chat, I showed her what was wrong with her ad and why she wasn't getting any respondents (because, y'know, it was an ad suited for a cheap place, not a Really Nice Place.  then I helped her put it on a few websites I'd been looking at (although I can't see it live on gumtree so can't link).  Then she offered me commission if I found someone that wanted to take the room.

So, anyone want a room in Hampstead for £250-£300 per week?  Hampstead, ten minutes walk from two tube stops, quiet, broadband, huge room, private bathroom, off street parking, one shared tenant, nice but slightly batty?

Still, a few to visit today that look promising, two of them within 5 minutes walk of Mike's flat (not sure if that's a good thing) and at least I know the area.  Really liking it up here; might possibly be spending too little time looking for a place to live, and  a bit too much time simply wondering around and getting on and off at random tube stops. Oh, and book shops. Might be going into them too often as well.

Also, snow?  My car is covered, went to get some stuff from it earlier, and it's actually white.  I mean, I know that's the colour of the paint, but it hasn't been this white since a few days after I bought it.  What is this snow stuff, we don't get that in Devon Torquay (seriously, we don't, it all melts immediately).  Good job I'm not driving anywhere today.

ETA: Saw a place earlier, small room in shared house, dirt cheap, all bills paid, includes wireless broadband, can't be argued with, and it'll give me incentive to find somewhere bigger when I'm settled in witha steady income. Me happy.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Madness)
Mat is happy.  Mat dragged [livejournal.com profile] nadriel away from Warcrack today and we went into Camden to meet [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat for lunch at the cafe I've always liked there.

Apart from the half of the Northern Line that we needed being shut, and them digging up half the road in Camden, it was nice. After food (have I mentioned I love Halloumi? I think I may have), we went to the Dev, where we talked geeky stuff and drank merrily. I like the Dev.

As a consequence, Mat is now not sober. And typing in third person. Sorry about that, awful habit, I'll blame Mike.

Anyway, I now have food cooked, and he want to do stuff and then read over his job application form due in tomorrow. So I'm going to eat and play R-Type on the PS2, there should be a post later on [livejournal.com profile] voting_taktix in which I channel Steve ([livejournal.com profile] tyrell) mightily, because, basically, Ruth Kelly is shit and should resign. And shockingly, this week, it's because she can't actually do her job, rather than because of decisions she's made out of work that merely proved she was shit at her previous job.

That's assuming Mike let's me back at the computer for a bit.
matgb: Text: If you're really a goth, where were you when we sacked Rome? (xGoth Rome)
OK then. [livejournal.com profile] _drop_zone_ was cool last night, was good to see many Reading friends again, and indeed meet people I'd heard about or talked to but not actually met before. I have no idea how much I drank, what I will say is that, for a bourbon, Maker's Mark is actually quite drinkable, [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween was right about that.

Consequently, I'm horribly hung over and not in the mood to think much, even now. Still lfat hunting )

Books: Susanna Clarke, John Scalzi, both good ) Suffice to say, for those that have read it, I want a BrainPal.

Anyway, Mike is snoring the other side of the room, I'm going to curl up in a corner and possibly watch some DVDs; I both got my Firefly back (yay!) and borrowed some new ones from Christy. Was good to meet people last night, and thanks to all for the chats, drinks, etc. In the meantime, I offer for your entertainment pleasure, conclusive proff that [livejournal.com profile] blogthings quiz results are completely and utterly suspect and normally far from reality.

Oh, also? To whichever anonymous person bought me the extra userpics bolt on as a gift? Thanks! I'm scared a little, but thanks anyway.

At Mike's parents, SELWG was cool, IE7 is better than any previous IE, but Opera and Fx are still better (that counts as a review).

Instruction: [livejournal.com profile] malkavelli those that don't recognise the username immediately should just go read anyway. Warlord players will understand this comment:
Wait. Mike won something? Wow, Warlord really has changed since I last played...;-)
Everyone else should just go read him take the piss out of a certain airhead that thinks joining the BNP is a good idea when you have an immigrant, non-white boyfriend, as this saves me from making a very similar post.

Sleep now. And I suspect that this will be another night in which the clowns aren't going to eat me.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (LJ-Marvin)
I love my LJ layout. I like the colour scheme, I like the friends page, I like the 3-column view, the tag cloud.

Unfortunately, it handles very long threaded conversations incredibly badly. On the one hand, comments=good, we like comments. On the other, a large chunk of text crammed into a comment an inch wide is just silly.

Gah! I can always append ?format=light, but that disappears after a comment is made, so you get the narrow column again. Ah well, back to a redesign of some sort I guess :-(

Maybe later. Much later. Maybe I'll just export everything earlier than planned. Oh, I dunno. My flat appointment for tonight got bumped to tomorrow, so I've got nowt to do, Mike's at a leaving do. Hmm, broadband. YouTube. I'll watch YouTube. And maybe some of [livejournal.com profile] ginasketch's stuff.

London lunch tomorrow?

Anyone want to meet up for lunch in town tomorrow? Or indeed Saturday?

London, safe(ish)

2007-Jan-10, Wednesday 15:38
matgb: (British)
Right, got to London last night, met with [livejournal.com profile] nhw, [livejournal.com profile] sammymorse and others (um, [livejournal.com profile] liadnan, were we sat next to each other for quite some time without realising it?) and am now at [livejournal.com profile] nadriel's. Flat hunting, job huntig, all to start, um, tomorrow. Tonight, I'm going to enjoy the benefits of London, starting with a bit of pointless bureacracy, registering my intention to join a protest. All organised by Mark Thomas, not maanged to make one before now (Mass Lone protest - Voting TaKtiX - I've decided to protest against discrimination against men with ponytails).

Fun fun. Details and links there, if anyone wants to joing us; registering your intenet to walk through Parliament Square a week in advance? Wonderfully stupid, thanks Tony...
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Marvin-Life)
So, in 2006, who was the biggest arsehole, Nick Griffin, Robert Mugabe or George Galloway? Each has had a tough fight to get to the finals, and now they duke it out. [livejournal.com profile] publicansdecoyhas more.

In other news, my car is back on the road, which means I've decided to simply drive up to London this afternoon, partially so I can make [livejournal.com profile] nhw's thing, but mostly because I've been stuck in the flat for a bit longer than planned and I really need to be making progress.

[livejournal.com profile] nadriel? At zero notice, can I take you up on your offer? If not, I'll find somewhere, but 'free' is always a favoured accommodation option in London.

So, eat, shop, change clothes (because I had to lie on the wet floor to sort out bits of the car) then drive up to London. About time, I hear you all cry...
matgb: (Life)
Yesterday, I said:
Off to see the lawyers tomorrow morning, hopefully be able to talk about it openly tomorrow evening.
And now I can. This morning, I went to see a local employment lawyer, and checked over the leaving documents. Terms of which are confidential, but I'm happy. I officially finish December 31st, but as the company shuts down for Xmas week, my last working day will be Friday 22nd. After that?

London. 95% certain on that one. I've been applying for a few jobs, but nothing concrete yet. I'll be ok financially for a month or so after getting up there, especially if I live really cheaply, so I'll be up to look for a place to stay &c a bit after Xmas/early new year, as well as obviously trying to get a job. I've unlocked my previous post from August, and I need to really put some effort in to actually making a go of this one.  The jobs market in Devon is pretty flat for mid+ management/analysis roles, even office admin roles are limited, so I'm pretty sure I'm making the right choice.

Probably the second biggest decision of my life, and almost certainly the riskiest, but hey, got to gamble a bit if you want to make it big, right?  There are a few jobs I'm after, and a few more that look interesting, beyond that?  Well, I have a new tag.  Let's see how things go, right?

Wish me luck. I think I might need it...

Oh yeah; if anyone knows of something that I'd be good at, gimme a shout?
matgb: (Life)
Right, went out last night in London (as [livejournal.com profile] nadriel had a former appointment with his Warcrack addiction), to see a recording of the Now Show. Met up unexpectedly with [livejournal.com profile] scorpionchild and also with [livejournal.com profile] bopeepsheep, who, by random chance, is a maintainer of a community I joined yesterday morning. So, I wrote up the report not here, but at [livejournal.com profile] yeoldelj, The Now Showwe. Looks like an amusing project, go join...

Tonight, [livejournal.com profile] synth_culture and we're meeting various people in the pub at Euston Station (called, The Winchester/The Head of Steam The Doric Arch apparently, but incase it's changed again it's the one that enters onto the bus station) from about 8.30pm.

Tomorrow, still planning on going to Oxford to that Dreddcon thing. [livejournal.com profile] juggzy, you still interested? No idea whereabout you're based, but I'd be looking at taking the 11.21 from Paddington it looks like. In the evening, with luck, meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] jantshira to catch up, haven't seen her since the summer.

Mat is happy. Mat has had a good, relaxing week in which he's acheived very little. Life is OK. Oh yeah. Buy a Euromillions ticket tonight. [livejournal.com profile] jiggery_pokery has done the maths, because of the rollover and guaranteed payout, the maths, for once, is in the favour of the punter.
matgb: (British)
Right then.  First off, on Friday morning I'm travelling to Luton to fly to Muenster for the weekend.  KoHIT beckons.  Monday, I fly back, and go to [livejournal.com profile] nadriel's place for the rest of the week (again).  So that's a week in South London, but with a guy that's working full time.  Ergo, I want a) stuff to do in the daytime and b) stuff to do when he's busy gaming and stuff.  So...

London Calling

Anyone about in London next week? )

Icons, LJ and games designers

Livejournal: the small world )

Neverwhere

It's a free download at his site, Postmortem Studios. In fact, it's got a lot of background stuff as well, so non-gamers like [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween and [livejournal.com profile] jantshira may be interested regardless as, y'know, it's Neverwhere

New Friends

Must. Stop. Adding. People... )

Dreddcon: 6.5% proof!

Anyone fancy some Oxford silliness? )

So, I've got a week and a bit off work, I'm off to see [livejournal.com profile] nearly_everyone in Germany, then spending a week bumming around London and LJ has provided me much amusement thus far last few days. Also, [livejournal.com profile] strictlytrue also went to Ottery, and has pictures. LJ's cool, most of the time. It's just a damn shame that it's dying.

Oh yeah, the [livejournal.com profile] beau_bo_d_or_fd feed has started working again after the LJ crash, Rumsfeld has resigned and the Dems have retaken Congress.  I'm off to try and work out what the swing was...
matgb: (Life)
OK, firstly, I am not sober. Not drunk, but not sober. Second, the link in my last post was to here at [livejournal.com profile] livejournal_uk, I used LJ Hook to insert the link and didn't check it as I was running out the door.

Third, Terry Pratchett is a god among men. Great public speaker, very funny, observant (as in, spotted and asked me the correct spelling for my name and was just generally cool), and, well, my credit card got used for a few more books. Not really an issue, it was birthday money, honest.

Fourth, I love LJ. As in, I love the community. Just over a year ago, I
went to S-C with [livejournal.com profile] nadriel. When there, I met two cool people. She who was to become [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween and the lady known as [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat. I've obviously got to know the former rather well, but I've actually met the latter three times in person total. Today was the third time. Yet we talked, got on, chatted, as if we knew each other and were old friends. Because of LJ. Because we've commented, helped each other out, advised, consoled, taken the piss, etc. I think this is a good thing. Tonight, also met [livejournal.com profile] rowanberries, who seems slightly more insane. Not as nuts as some on my f-list, but still.

LJ wittering )

Oh, the title? It's a reference to his next book. Which sounded very cool. And involved a joke with a clockwork vibrator. Seriously.

Oh yeah, [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat? [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs here. Red Dwarf + Buffy. As discussed.
matgb: Artwork of 19th century upper class anarchist, text: MatGB (Default)
Drove up yesterday, got stuck in traffic (and, let's face it, I was late leaving anyway), then got lost (really must contact Merton council about how crap their signage is), but eventually got to [livejournal.com profile] nadriel's.

Went out in town last night, to College Arms initially, then wandered down Oxford street to meet [livejournal.com profile] faeriecween and [livejournal.com profile] jantshira, we, eventually, found a pub that wasn't shut. In Soho, all the pubs still shut at 11. WTF? There were, of course, other places open, but, well, a bit pricey for entry...

Anyway, up most of the week, only set plan is to be back in the office Monday, and going to Reading tonight to see people, anyone want to suggest something I could do other than maybe go see pTerry on Thursday evening?
